Default Polish stock rims?

I have the stock 97 WS6 polished wheels here is an example

http://www.lakeshorewheelandtire.com/wheels/6531.JPG

the clear coat has peeled off the wheels in certain areas. I can polish them to a certain degree with hard elbow grease and a large powerball from mothers.

But I heard that there is a way to remove the clear coat and mirror polish the aluminum underneath.
I have been debating on whether I should buy new rims or buy more go fast parts. I would rather re-polish these and go fast

Any suggestions

Once you remove the clearcoat, you will have to always polish them again and again.
I have redone two sets of GTA style thirdgen Diamond Spoke wheels, and repainted the centers, after sanding off the clearcoat. I have to polish them every so often, and after the polish, I put a couple coats of wax on them.
You can send them out to be totally redone, with the clearcoat.
Check your local body shops, to see where they send out for wheel damage repair.

Hope this helps,

George

actually I have found a place, but they wanted nearly 150 a rim, thats pretty steep.

I was thinking of doing it myself to save some money.

I can try to clear coat it myself and see how it goes, if the clear looks bad, I can just take it off again.

Steep? for repairing out of round wheels, repairing curb rash, media stripping them, powder coat in any color you want then put them on a CC lathe to duplicate that factory finish on the exposed aluminum and then clear powder coat the entire wheel? Steep? No,... more than fair I say.

I've paid that money and more to have my snowflakes and then my GTA wheels done.

You already own the wheels so you don't have to make the initial investment and THEN have the work done.

Think about it again, I'm pretty sure you'll be happier having it done once then having to do it twice...or three times.

they didnt say they would do all that, just to repolish and reapply the clear coat, they said nothing about the curb rash or fix an out of round problem

Oh, all right. The company that did my sets did all that as part of the cost per wheel. Frankly, a pretty good deal considering what I would have spent on decent aftermarket wheels.

That looks like a great DIY project, with very little investment at all. Are those chrome? or polished aluminum?

they are polished aluminum, so its gonna mean having to go in there and repolish them every once and a while, but with the OEM clear coat, its just a waiting game, because you cant polish them because of the coating. All you can do is wait for that stuff to start peeling, I did all I could to keep the clear coat in good condition and nothing happened.

But I will take the clear coat off like in that thread and I will post the results on here.
