1971 shoulder belts
I have researched the threads to try to determine if Pontiac installed shoulder belts on front seats on a 1971 GTO. I see the custom seatbelt options of 451 and 452 but does that mean that without either option the factory installed basic seat and shoulder belts or just seat belts?
Thanks. |

Mandatory shoulder belts on fronts for sure...

My '71 T-37 two door hardtop has them (factory installed). Almost certain they were federally mandated for '71...except convertibles.

My 71 GTO has the front shoulder belts and no where on my build sheet are the option codes 451 & 452, so they have to be standard. I know they're factory installed.

Shoulder selts
The previous owner of my new-to-me 71 GTO installed a headliner as well as a carpet set and neglected to install the shoulder belts ( or just didn't like them). I guess I am now in the market for a set because I do use them while driving.

At least it will be a fairly easy install...the threaded holes are there in the roof behind the headliner. Don't forget the loop retainers for keeping the shoulder belts tucked away when not in use (the holes are there for those too).

Here are a couple of pics for reference...note the headliner bow locations...are your coat hooks there?

These are the optional custom deluxe belts by the way (in Sandalwood).

No coat hooks installed. The headliner installed left a clean slate on his install. No evidence of any shoulder hardware.

Dumb question but what makes them a custom deluxe belt? Is it the stitching?

I believe that it is the latches. My 70 GTO had the deluxe seatbelts with this configuration. My 71 has the basic black plastic latch.

My 71 has the basic black latches. I do like the looks of the custom latches. Gives the interior a little more eye appeal.

The custom deluxe seat belts are color-keyed to the car's interior color. The buckles are either brushed metal like mine, or coated the same color as the belts/interior.
Standard belts are all black with black plastic buckles. There are black custom deluxe belts, with either the brushed metal buckles or coated black buckles depending on the GM variant. Tell-tale way to quickly identify custom deluxe belts...the male metal end that goes into the buckle has a square hole rather than rectangular (see photo I posted above of my shoulder belt).

I have found that the best donor cars for custom deluxe color-keyed belts, with either the brushed metal buckles or coated buckles, are Oldsmobile Cutlasses and Pontiac Grand Prix. Other good sources are Toronados, Rivieras, Skylarks, and Cadillacs. Maybe Monte Carlos. Not common in Pontiac A-bodies and Chevelles.
I put my '71 brushed metal buckle set together from a '71 GP and a '71 Cadillac coupe, plus buckle pieces and covers from various other cars (all in salvage yards).

Nice deluxe belts. I always look at the seat belts now in any GM car at shows...so few cars have deluxe belts, especially with the brushed buckles.
