Default Muffler ideas ?

Looking for some input on mufflers. I have dynomax super turbos. I really don't like the turbo sound. I want something with a nice crisp sound and by no means super loud. Would rather have something quieter if I have to get the sound I want instead of louder. I have 3 inch pipes and I don't really think the super turbos are too loud. What are the crowd favorites ?

I saw your sig tab but there's 2 cars there and it's pretty rare to have that big of a motor and have DynoMax Super Turbos. Sound is so subjective but DM Super Turbos are extremely quiet even with a big motor. If you want a 'better' sound, it's going to need to be a little bit louder. Have a listen to this PY Forums member's car and tell me what you think. It's a 9 second car with Pypes 3.5" Race Pro mufflers and X-pipe without tailpipes.

this one below is a 3" Pypes Street Pro mufflers, X-pipe and tailpipes. Motor is 650hp I believe.

Cars with tailpipes are much quieter. Street Pro is more raspy and louder sounding than Race Pro.

magnaflow with x-pipe is pretty mellow, as far as 3" exhaust can be. i like it. sounds wonderful when you're 'on' it.

Agreed, Magnaflow muffler is a good choice as well. MagnaFlow and Pype Race Pro are VERY similar design, construction and sound.

That's the difference between a chambered muffler and a packed muffler. Street Pro has no packing, just metal dividers inside. Race Pro and MagnaFlow are filled with fiberglass matting. Hence all the 'edge' or the high tones are taken out of the sound.

How about these? I put a 2 1/2" Flowmaster h-pipe kit on this 71 LeMans. The motor is a 462 with a Crower RamAir IV cam(60919). Not too loud and has a nice rumble to it. The mufflers are the Super 40 series with the 5X10 case size.

For the money it's hard to beat the new fully welded "Thrush" mufflers. They have no packing just deflectors with great flow. They are quieter than a Flowmaster and sound better when you get on it. fwiw JD

Steve,

After reading the research he did on mufflers, and talking with Tom Hand here, I went with the Goerlich Xelerator123's. Its an 18" body, 3" inlet/outlet, and its a packed muffler, but flows 97% of what a straight 3" pipe flows! Dropped my decibels at 2500 rpm from 102 to 95, allowing me to pass DE inspection. So far very happy....no more annoying drone between 2200 rpm and 2600 rpm like with the old Spin techs. And I have a metal floor still as I have yet to install the sound deadening and carpet.

My 3" system is an oldie. I welded it up before most of the mufflers mentioned above were created. Torque Tech mandrel bent 3" pipe, 3" H pipe, 3" Flowmaster 50 Series mufflers, and tail pipes out to the bumper. Nice and mellow at idle, but does attract attention at full throttle. There are no cutouts - what you hear is through the mufflers:

or the one out in front of Harry's (the first engine sound on the video is another Pontiac warming up on the dyno):
