I should add, the rear looks a lot like the Barris creation "Superteen".

Kurt, you mean D80?
Looks like D80 to me. Wasn't the others a 350 2bbl also? (except TA)

I know it's not your fault Boss.
I had worked the pic over and the 'B' looked like a 'D' after all the CSIing on it. So, what's the letter after the color number?

73-B.
Sure looks the same as the B in B80. But with that pic, it's not definitive. |

We have gone round and round on this in at least one other thread.
My opinion is that the code that you see on this Data Plate was B80. Wouldn't matter if it was a coupe or convert. Only appears on Data Plates during the final two weeks of 'bird production at Lordstown, the Time Built code will always be 03-B or 03-C. All cars with this code will show as equipped with the Decor Group option. Almost certainly a consequence of the March 13, 1969 announcement (for cars produced starting March 17) of the Firebird standard content change that made the Roof Drip Scalp Molding optional (and subsequently only available as part of the Decor Group from that point forward for the Base Firebird). Exception, the Roof Drip Scalp Molding was included with any 400 engine option. IMO, the poor quality pix have given rise to the idea that the code may have been D80 rather than B80. The only other exception was reported by Ric Pratt who had recorded a very late 03-C Lordstown Data Plate with the AEE code (unfortunately, no pic of it, Ric did not realize the import of the code when he ran across it years ago). AEE was used by Norwood when they subsequently took over 'bird production in April after Lordstown 'bird production was shifted to that Plant and the AEE was connected to the Decor Group. It is also my opinion that Lordstown initially used the D80 code to identify the Decor Group option starting with 03-B builds and very late changed to the AEE and Norwood continued coding the Decor Group as AEE when production moved there. It is interesting that this recent example has been interpreted by some as reading D80 rather than B80. Looking back to the also low quality pic of the Data Plate that triggered this research effort, I believe that it also was being misinterpreted as D80, a high resolution, high quality pic would probably prove that it also is coded B80. It seemed strange since B80 had been specific to the Roof Drip Molding at other Fisher Body Plants for years but the car in question is a convertible. It became less strange when a 2nd 03-B convertible also turned up with the B80 code. Both cars show the Decor Group option on the PHS invoice record. Unless evidence is found to disprove this conclusion, it is my contention that the B80 (or AEE) code will be found on 03-B & 03-C Lordstown builds that included the Decor Group option, for both coupes and convertible. No PHS record was included for the ebay car, but the 03-B build does show Roof Drip Molding in the pix, so almost certainly was originally equipped with the Decor Group option and the B80 code would be consistent with all other evidence I have found to date. Edit, correction for previous post.
10th paragraph should have said, "It is also my opinion that Lordstown initially used the B80 code to identify the Decor Group option starting with 03-B builds and very late changed to the AEE..." |

That strikes me as the proper and logical conclusion.

A much better picture of that cowl tag shows that it is a B80, as expected.
I'd still like to see an LOR AEE tag. I've been looking for a while now and have not seen one. |

Another showed up, 03B car, 9U134710. Great data - tag and broadcast sheet.
Tag clearly shows B80, as does the broadcast sheet. No PHS. http://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e11021...SS%3AUS%3A1123 And just for reference, this is the link to the other D80 thread with some BS in it, but still has good info in it too. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=647907 |

Kurt is asking about LOR AEE, ie., from a Lordstown build.
Norwood Data Plates with AEE are common, AEED80 common on Norwood TAs. AEE indicated the Decor Group. The Lordstown AEE started with Transamric. He found that on a Lordstown Data Plate long ago and recorded it. Unfortunately, it had no significance to him at the time, so he did not take a picture. He did record the VIN and other Data Plate details. Time built code was 03-C, the last week for Lordstown production of '69 Firebirds before tooling was moved to Norwood. Lordstown did not code any accessory codes until 03-B. The timing seems to correspond with the March 13, 1969 announcement that certain Firebird standard content items would be made optional starting with production on 3/17/69 so to reduce the base price. Among the items eliminated from the std content was Roof Drip Scalp Moldings. They became part of the Decor Group. 03-B production Lordstown 'birds, both coupes and convertibles, have shown B80 on the Data Plate and the cars were equipped with Decor Group. One 03-B convertible reportedly shows D80. The pic presented is very fuzzy and may actually be B80. And then there is the 03-C coupe spotted by Transamric that showed the AEE. B80 traditionally is the UPC code for Roof Drip Molding. I can't explain why that would be coded on a convertible. I can't explain why Norwood used the AEE code to represent all or part of the Decor Group option on the Data Plate. I have only recorded the AEE on Norwood coupes, no convertibles so far. Lordstown began coding the B80 during week 03-B. Perhaps it was used to generally indicate Decor Group on a coupe or convertible or perhaps it was a human error when it was coded on a convertible, only intended to be coded on a coupe. Since the drip moldings were only just made optional that week, it is conceivable that the coding instructions were confused at first. On the basis of one example, it looks like Lordstown may have taken to coding the Decor Group as AEE in the last week of production there, then Norwood continued the practice when Firebird production was picked up at Norwood. Fastassbird, if you have a Lordstown Data Plate showing AEED80, that would be unique, please post it. If it is from a Norwood build, not so interesting. |
