Fuel filter
Have a #17054913 quadrajet on my 71 gto. Carb had a sintered bronze filter filter in it. Went to get the small paper filter with the check valve in it thinking thats what a mid 70s carb should have. Paper element wouldnt fit in the barrel. Maybe i might have the wrong barrel that attaches to the carb? I thought the bronze filter was for pre 70s cars?

Yes, most certainly the wrong inlet nut.
This 1973-74 Service Replacement Q-jet should have the paper filter w/o the roll-over checkvalve. Those roll-over checkvalves restricts flow and should be avoided for performance usage. Also, they do NOT stop fuel from evaporate from the fuel bowl. |

But I wouldn't use it because they restrict flow. I just remove it and use a Rb Mc inline filter before the carb.

Cliff, Thanks for the tip about removing the OEM filter and using Rb Mc.

Who is this Cliff fella anyway?
I suspect Tim might appreciate us steering them towards the real Cliff before this gets out of hand. https://cliffshighperformance.com/ |

This is Cliff's website for everything Quadrajet: https://cliffshighperformance.com/ This is Cliff's book: https://cliffshighperformance.com/Qu...et-carburetors Cliff frequents this board and is very helpful. Apparently he must be on a temporary hiatus as I, along with many others, had expected him to post some advice. |

Another reason to NOT use the internal filter is because the inlet threads are soft & very easily stripped. Once I get the inlet sealed, I don't ever wanna have to remove it again. I've always been on a low budget. So, I've always used a cheap inline filter, such as the NAPA 3033/WIX 33033. Never had a problem doing it this way. https://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/33033.html https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/FIL3033 https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b.../33033/4832387 Last edited by ponyakr; 05-18-2019 at 10:05 AM. |

Seems as though cutting in a inline filter using rubber gas line might be a fire hazard?

Yeah, if there's a fire, the rubber would melt before the metal line would. But, if you use FI grade hose & wide band hose clamps, there shouldn't be any leaks, at the hose connections. Worked for me, for many years, on drag & street cars & trucks. Never had the filter hose connections cause a fire. Nowadays, there are some guys who insist on braided hose & AN fittings for most all plumbing lines. https://www.summitracing.com/search/...%20fuel%20line https://www.summitracing.com/search/...7%2B4294948057 I suppose that all-metal lines, with a submerged in-tank pump would be the safest fuel delivery system. Doh! Saw "early" didn't work, assumed he had a late carb. Should've paid more attention.

http://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/filters.html Bottom of the page shows replacement elements for them. They are washable and appear to be made out of the same stuff your filter is. Kinda like the composite bronze filters myself. They seem run longer than the short paper filters before they stop up. And part stores usually have them in stock. Just like the paper filters. Clay
