Default Honda CR-V

Anyone here have one. My wife had a Toyota Highlander but traded it on a Camry in 2013 for the gas mileage, she was driving 300 miles round trip to see her mother in a nursing home.
Anyway, to make a long story short her mother recently passed away and she would like to get back into a small SUV.
We drove a 2019 Cr-V EX-L today and she liked it. We may try a Toyota RAV-4 tomorrow but from what I have read the Honda is the better of the two vehicles.
I want whatever we buy to last for at least 8 years.
So what can You all tell me about either one of them.

The only real issue that was huge was the Takata air bag recall. But a 2019 would not have them. My daughter has a 2010 CRV, just turned 100K miles. The only issue is the typical low quality switch gear, electric motors, radios, typical Honda stuff. In the last year, the rear wiper motor died, cruise control switch, hatch struts, noisy blower motor, radio that works 50% of the time as far as the display. Typical Honda stuff. Mechanically, bullet proof. They do use some oil though, so plan on checking it now and then. Her's uses a quart every 1500-2000 miles. Honda has a standing service policy where they will replace piston rings in the 2.4L engine up to 125K miles for free. But they will only do it with the engine in the car. I feel it's better to just add a little oil when needed than have some idiot screw up all kinds of other things trying to do an in car ring job. She likes the car overall. Averages 26 MPG.

My Mom has a 2016. It's been extremely reliable, except the original battery took a dump and it wasn't even 3 years old. Other than that, it's been fine.

I think it averages around 28mpg. Not terrible for a fulltime AWD suv. They're certainly not as small as the 1st generations, and weigh quite a bit more.

We test drove one in 2010 before my wife got her RAV4. We were driving up a hill, and I told her “punch it - I want to see how much power it has.” Her answer was “my foot is already on the floor. End of test drive.

I’ve driven 3 Hondas or Acuras a total of 750,000 miles, and Honda’s big weak spot is the electrical system - which is really bad with modern cars where everything is electronic. I’d go with a RAV4 instead.

I don't have any experience with newer Toyotas, but the older ones I've had have been totally bulletproof as far as electrical systems go.

My '97 Accord has had some electrical issues - mainly the door lock and window switches and the window motors. The heater control knobs are also prone to breaking. My girlfriend's '06 Accord has similar issues but worse than mine. A couple of her doors won't lock/unlock with the switches any more, the switch on the passenger side doesn't work, and the window switch for the rear driver's side window on the driver's door doesn't work.

I haven't seen these kinds of issues with Toyotas, but again I don't have a lot of experience with newer ones..

My wife is on her 8th new Honda, last two were CRVs ... I do all the maintenance on them and I have to say I think the quality has gone down. We are looking at a RAV now. At about 1.5 years old I had to replace the rear rotors and calipers that would seize up if it was left parked for a week .... rear rotors and pads were trashed from the calipers sticking all the time.
It has been very reliable as far as starting and running well, and the 4wd is excellent. It also strangely trashed the two front tires in 25,000 miles ... I mean down to the cords trashed and the rears were fine ... although I was remiss in my rotation schedule. Still, the difference in wear was extreme to say the least.
But compared to a Honda of ten years ago ... no doubt they are no longer the premium brand for compact vehicles, the days of Honda supremacy is gone in my opinion. And I have been a diehard Honda fan both cars and motorcycles for many years.

Our next car will probably be a CRV.

I have a 2017. This was the first year of the new model and it had some issues with the electronics (digital display, and sensors). The 2019's should have most of those problems resolved now. The turbo 1.5 liter engine is a bit slow off the line, but once moving is ok. Ours is 4 wheel drive and gets 28 mpg.

I agree with the above comments about electrical failures with Honda's. My wife's Honda had some of the same issues with window motors, clock, ect. The Toyota's are less troublesome by far than a Honda. I still like Honda's but a Toyota is better.

We went to look at the Toyota this morning and my wife didn't like it so we went back and bought the Honda CR-V EX-L. I told her that in order to get it she would have to give up her 2014 Mustang as well as the 13 Camry. She agreed so that will drop my insurance almost in half. We put less than 7,000 miles a year on our vehicles and as long as we let the Honda dealer do routine maintenance the car will be covered mechanically until we sell or trade it. That is in addition to the factory warranty.

My wife has a 2018 CRV, has 29k miles on it. Just had to put a new set of tires on it. Her biggest complaint is the road noise. Original tires should last more than 29k miles, especially when they were rotated by the dealer each oil change.

My wife's only complaint is a lack of a CD player. I guess everyone today is using their phones.

If you want it to last 8 years, you want the RAV4. My daughter has an 18 and loves it.

My wife did not like the RAV-4 at all. She decided on the Honda.

I forgot that feature of Hondas - every one of mine came with horrible tires. You’ve gotta buy good ones when those wear out.

Yep, that was strange, my wife's 2016 trashed the tires in 25K miles. As far as noise .. yeah, my 2011 GMC truck is way more quiet. Our CRV is the base model so I guess the other models might be better.

After owning Hondas for about 30 years I can tell that there is price point competition from South Korea that is forcing Honda to take more short cuts than they did 20 years ago.

Yes indeed. The Korean cars have lowered the bar for everyone else that wants to play in their price range. Entry level junk is too big a market to ignore so the Japanese brands have to dumb down their product. Although the Korean entries have improved drastically from total crap to OK vehicles until the warranty ends, they still have a long way to go for people who keep their cars 130K miles + and 12-15 years. Few people do, so they know their market.

We have a 2008 CRV with over 200k miles, overall a good, reliable vehicle. Went shopping for a new car on Saturday and drove a 2019 CRV and 2019 Pilot. The 2019 CRV had a rough and noisy ride compared to the 2008. The Pilot has a much nicer ride. Also drove the Passport but the upgraded EX-L model was $3K more than the Pilot EX with similar features. Went back and bought the Pilot today at $6400 below MSRP. No haggling, no pressure sales pitch, and the salesman brought us the price as soon as we asked for it.
