Need advice re. ignition wiring - 1966 Pontiac Catalina
I am rewiring my 1966 Pontiac Catalina and am trying to figure out how to properly wire the ignition switch. I am using the original 8-contact ignition switch but have modified the vehicle:
Dakota Digital HDX gauges MSD 6AL ignition box with MSD 8563 distributor and HEI coil. Holley Sniper EFI American Autowire Highway 22 wiring with trunk mounted fuse panel I am not using the included American Autowire ignition switch because it does not fit my dash. The original switch configuration is like this: https://1drv.ms/i/s!AlmmiSwpaFhN2QfX...NxMHO?e=H3fwji https://1drv.ms/b/s!AlmmiSwpaFhN2QJe...LDQ9r?e=D23wAb I *think* have figured out most of it using the American Autowire instructions and an original wiring schematice as a guide: The BROWN (accessory) wire goes to the FUSE PANEL and will distribute power to the accessories via the fuse panel. The PURPLE wire goes to the NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH, which then passes to the starter solenoid on the starter. The RED wire goes to (comes from) the FUSE PANEL and provides power to the ignition switch. The PINK wire also goes to the FUSE PANEL to provide switched power to the ignition circuit on the panel, but is also accompanied by a fuzzy white wire shown in the schematics as a RESISTOR wire, which originally joined the YELLOW wire mentioned next at the fuse box. The YELLOW wire is the original COIL wire and will go to the MSD 6AL box. Per the MSD instructions this wire only draws .250 mA and is the trigger wire for the MSD box. Power for the MSD box is drawn from the hot side of the starter solenoid. The GREEN wire connected to the G terminal appears to have originally gone to the temperature indicator and the temperature sensor. Can I eliminate this wire since I have the Dakota Digital HDX gauges? The WHITE wire originally would have gone to the voltage regulator. Given that I am now using an internally regulated alternator, do I need this wire? If so, where should it connect to? The RED/WHITE wire (red with white stripe) is soldered into the main RED power wires providing power to the two bus bars in the fuse panel. What is the function of this wire? Do I need a secondary power source to this terminal on the ignition switch? Can I eliminate the resistor wire completely since I’m not running points? So, to reiterate my questions: Can I eliminate the white wire from the ignition switch that used to go to the voltage regulator? What is the function of the red/white wire – do I need a secondary power input to this ignition switch? Can I eliminate the green wire? Can I eliminate the fuzzy white resistor wire? |

Yes, HEI needs the full 12 volts.
