69 GTO starting circuit
I bought a new engine harness for my GTO and I didn't realize I could get it with an HEI wire. So I decided to just run one into the car, Usually I tap it into the pink wire but on this ignition switch there's no wire that is hot cranking and in the on position. So I connected to the one terminal in the middle of the fuse box that had power cranking and key on. It still would not start, I have 12 volts at the power wire in the on position (coil cover off) then as soon as I crank it the voltage drops to 7.5. So where are you guys connecting your HEI's to in a 69 GTO?

I install a relay supplied with battery voltage and triggered by the original coil positive wire. That wire has enough voltage to always turn on the relay.

OK. So power the relay with the battery, coil wire to one side of normally open contacts the hei power the other side of the contacts? HMMMM sounds good! What do you do mount it right on the firewall?

When I cooked the resistance wire in my 70 F body, cause I was unaware of that issue ( so was the PO who installed the HEI for that matter ), I made a new wire.
Removed the burnt one from bulkhead connector/engine harness, grabbed some 56 style and HEI terminals, then crimped away. I do not know if A Body’s have a resistance wire in the dash side of the circuit, that was recently discussed on here. If that’s the case, what I did will not work for you.

The 69 GTO has the resistor wire under the dash. (along with the yellow wire for cranking)
Replacing that wire under the dash would be easier I'd think?

I usually mount the relay near the original coil + (pos) wire just for convenience. I have used this method for many years. It is easy and you don't have to mess around under the dash.

OK, looks like I'll get a relay then.

Expanding on this. I did not do the relay. It was a dead battery... dumb me. Car started and ran fine but did not shut off with the key. The key would not come back enough. I previously bought a rebuilt column from a member here with plans to do it later so I just replaced it now. The original column was an auto on the column completely trashed with gear lever sawed off, etc. I replaced the column. Key works properly, put my repop ignition switch in from ames, started the car, turned the key all the way back and the car did not shut off. So I go out there tonight and and now I have 12v at the IGN terminal at every position of the key. I tried adjusting the switch in about 8 or 9 different spots to ne avail. I'm chasing my tail here.
