Torq-Thrust Backspace Question.
I would like to run a set of 15x7 Torq-Thrust "D" wheels on my 67' GTO. American Racing Wheels Tech. line says this wheel has a 3.75" backspace which isn't very much compared to the Pontiac Rally ll 4.375" I would like to run the widest tire I can without any rubbing/clearance problems. My choice would be a set of 235x60x15 Firestone 500's or Goodyear Eagle GT ll tires. I was looking at the BF Goodrich Radial TA's but see quite a few negative reviews of the TA's. Does anyone run this particular wheel with a 235x60 tire? If so, are there any clearance problems? Would a smaller size tire (225x60) solve the problem. My local dealers are about 30% higher in price for a set of tires and wheels than Summit is so I would like order a set from Summit but don't want to order a set that won't fit or cause problems. Any firsthand advice you can provide will be appreciated. Thanx.

Why not buy a rim with a little more backspace?? I believe you can order the backspace you want......you will just have to wait for it.
I went thru the same thing with the "catalog" wheel ordering as I could not fine anything with a backspace over 4" in stock.......and of course I wanted them NOW! I did what you are trying to do and ordered a 4" backspace on a gamble that the tire I wanted to run would not rub or look funny in the wheel well. That backfired and I returned the rims.......another lesson learned. Ended up buying a custom set of wheels in the backspace I desired.....everything fits perfect that way.

The Torq-Thrust Ds are NOT the ticket. You need to get the Torq-Thrust IIs (Classic for grey center) and get the proper backspacing.
Do a search on eBay and you can find several wheel outlets that sell NEW American Racing Torq-Thrust IIs in the size you need. I run 15x7 up front and 15x8 out back on my '67 GTO.

I purchased a pair of Cragars and BFG's from Summit last year. They mounted and balanced them and the price was much better that the local tire stores. BFG's are great as long as you understand that they are not high perf tires or made for drag racing. For street cruising and looks BFG's are hard to beat and last a long time.

TTO's.
Kate's 67', Those wheels look great on your car. Thanks for posting the photo!
Big Injun, I went to Summit & Jeg's & couldn't find a listing for the Torq-Thrust D Classic but Jeg's does offer a 15x7 wheel they call the TTO (Torq-Thrust original) is that the same wheel you recommended? Do you know what back space the 15x7 comes with? American Racing shows they offer a 4.25" in this wheel but it's special order. I didn't realize how complicated it can be when trying to buy a new set of tires & wheels! I'm just trying to avoid problems and having to return things if they don't fit properly. Thanks for everyone's advice. |

I thought Torque Thrust II were the ricey looking polished 17"-18" spoked rims Why would they make a TTII that looks like a TTD? Is it only backspace that is different?

235x60's on the Front?
Okay, I'm convinced that the 235x60 will work fine for the rear tires. Now, can someone reaffirm that the 235x60 will also work on the front? I'm so very close to ordering these wheels and tires and want to make certain I order the right sizes. If there's any chance the front tires will rub I'll order the next smaller size down, 225x60. The backspace for these TTO's is 3.75" and anything larger is a special order that have to be produced by American Racing Wheels. This means about a month wait and more $ so I hope the standard 3.75" will work. Are any of you running a 235x60x15 with a 3.75" backspace on the front of your 67' GTO's? Or, have any of you attempted this size and ran into trouble? Any input will be appreciated.

Kate's 67' GTO-What Backspace?
Are your Torq-Thrust D wheels the standard 3.75" backspace or is it something different? I think the 215x65 on the front is the only way to go with this particular backspace. I believe the 235x60 or 225x60 will rub on the outer fenderwell lip because of the smaller backspace. I'm still holding off on ordering a set of wheels and tires until I figure out the best combination for the front.

Yes that is correct 3.75 B/SP. I tried 245/60/15 on the front but they would hit big time. The 215/65/15 do not hit at all , just keep your tire pressure up 36lbs and your fine. If it falls too low you will hear a rubbing that is park brake cable indent on the left front wheel well no worries.(left turns only) I also have disc brakes on the front from a 72 Olds no issues there either. If your considering going with BFG tires then if memory serves me right you can not get a 215/15 .

Pay the extra money to get the custom backspace. You'll be glad you did, worth every penny.
I can't imagine why they even offer this wheel with the 3.75" backspace, nothing but problems with tire rubbing (or very limited tire sizes) for nearly any application they're used on.

B-Man, You're Absolutely Correct!
Now I find that the TTO wheel can NOT be ordered with increased backspace! The regular Torq-Thrust D can be special ordered with up to 4.5" backspace but Torq-Thrust Original can only be bought with the 3.75" backspace. You'd think American Racing would produce this wheel to fit most of our Pontiac's without having to run narrow tires on the fronts to avoid rubbing and scrapeing but it apperas they don't. It's a shame as I really like the looks of this wheel.

Let me make this perfectly clear...
Torq-Thrust D is a one-piece cast wheel. Maximum backspacing is 3 3/4 inches. Torq-Thrust II is a two-piece wheel. This provides for multiple backspacing opportunities. In stock part #s provide a 15x8 with 4 1/2 backspacing and 15x7 with 3 3/4 backspacing. You can also order any backspacing you wish up to 5 1/4 on a 15x8 or up to 4 1/2 on a 15x7. You also have many other options as you go up to 16" and 17" Torq-Thrust IIs. 16s and 17s with 4 1/2" backspacing work great and are a stocking part #.

Big Injun, American Racing Tells Me This.
I spent 30 minutes on the telephine with American Racing Wheels Technical Support. Here's what they told me: The Torq-Thrust TTO is a completely different wheel from the Torq-Thrust D or the Torq-Thrust ll. It is a 3-piece aluminum wheel, comes ONLY with a 3.75" backspace, and no custom sized backspacings are offered in this wheel at this time. It comes in ONLY 2 sizes: a 15x7 and a 15x8.5. If you have different info. as to getting this 15x7 wheel with a 4.375" or 4.50" backspace pls. advise as I'd like to order a set. I'm basing all my specs. on what the American Racing guy told me and maybe (hopefully) he didn't know what he was talking about!

The Torq-Thrust Original (which is what I think you are referring to) is also a one piece cast wheel like the Torq-Thrust D. Maybe the tech guy (likely located in India) is confused.
To the best of my knowledge (and I spoke with them at SEMA) you will not find a 3-piece Torq-Thrust from American Racing. In order the attached are...Torq-Thrust D, Torq-Thrust Original and Torq-Thrust II.

I emailed them on this and he told me the Torque Thrust II classic is what is needed for this situation (mine aswell). The classic can be had with custom offsets.
You can view the CL205 here http://americanracing.com/wheels/det...0rim§ion=V

TTO, Model #309.
BILTIT, I tried to order the Torq-Thrust Original (called the TTO) in a 15x7 with custom backspace (4.5"). This wheel is model #309 at American Racing. Rep. says not possible! The #309 TTO comes in either 15x7 or 15x8.5. Both of which come with 3.75" backspace. No other backspacing offered. I asked about the #205 which you showed pictures of. He says the #205 IS a custom backspace model for the regular model #105 which is the standard Torq-Thrust D. This TTO (#309) is sort of a unique animal as it does differ in appearance from the other 2 Torq-Thrusts, the ll and the D. If there are any American Racing Dealers out there who can order me a set TTO's, model #309, in a 15x7 with 4.5" backspace pls. PM me and I think we can do business. I didn't know buying a set of wheels could be so complicated! Thanks for everyone's input and advice. I now know what I want, just not able to order a set thusfar. BIGINJUN was right in that the TTO is a ONE piece wheel, NOT a three piece as I was told by an American Wheels Tech. Rep.

I see, so you specifically want TTO's. I am just looking for some custom offsets in a wheel like the TTD. From what i understand most 1 piece wheels are cast and have only the available offsets as each one requires a different mold. They will not make custom offsets as this requires a custom mold which is not economical to the manufacturer.
Sorry about your troubles. I am happy that i can get some custom offsets in wheels like my TTD's although it sucks cuz they are more expensive!
