So your prospect probably had a couple or few clues that would knock it out of the running.
The trim tag would have produced a double negative.
However, trim tags are reproduced these days and a savvy swindler could get one made for that car that would reflect a proper build week and paint code.

PHS is the ultimate confirmation.
And we have seen a few cases of doctored invoices as well.
So bottom line is you have to buy your own copy in most cases.
PHS is still an excellent source, but people are now using this service for fraudulent means. Someone on Facebook was showing off his collection of cowl and vin tags he collected over the years from salvage yards. People are getting the PHS from these cars and turning a Lemans, Tempest, into a GTO. You see this more with the rarer cars. Yes, PHS is good but still you have to beware if the car is rare as people are creating more of these cars as the value goes up. Seems there are more Judges now than ever before.

I can attest to this, every month I forget to send an alimony check I get to see a judge.
