Default 69 con top stopped working

I was installing new weatherstrip on the top, kept putting the top up a 6or 7 times as it would bleed down and now it doesn't work. Is there a circuit breaker or fuse that I can check? I checked the ground and that is good.

There should be a Circuit Breaker mounted on the firewall, like near the wiper motor.

Hi Ron, that should not be a fuse. All 69 power top equipped convertibles that did not also have power seat and or power windows used what they called a shorting bar which was basically a solid metal rod That looks like aluminum In place of a fuse.

If your convertible also had power windows and or a power seat then instead of that rod you should instead have a 40 amp circuit breaker.

The reason they didn’t use a fuse was precisely to avoid what happened to you is that by running the top for an extended period of time you heated up the motor which increased the draw and blew the fuse. If you don’t wanna get stuck on a rainy day with a top that’s not operating you really should get one of those circuit breakers.

Mine doesn't have power windows or seats. Where would you get one of those metal bar? Would a higher amp fuse be ok?

What probably happened is at some point the shorting bar melted from a bad pump motor or a crossed connection. I’ve never been able to find them in any original parts catalog. But as I mentioned I’d instead get one of those 40 amp breakers, unlike the fuse or the shorting bear they reset so they don’t leave you hanging. Checking on eBay if see a listing, with 2 new ones for 12 bucks, free shipping…

Here is a pic, this one is 30 amps, GM documents are weirdly scarce on details of what amps they should be. My best guess from seeing lots of cars with them over the years is convertible with seats and or windows was 40amps while non convertibles with seats or windows was 30. 30 would probably work for convertible without seats or windows but that was never a factory application.
