Thanks all. With all of the good suggestions here it looks like I will just be comparing prices from here out and I'm still interested in which side your lugs are winding up on.... Or did I get misinformation in that regard?
I think I could still dig that thread up where a forum user posted a photo of the Powermaster with the lugs about an inch from the manifold.

IMI have the cable between the starter and the block. At least mine does.

Not sure what the side lug clearance is like with manifolds, but I can say that with headers there is ample clearance and the location of the electrical connections is a non-issue. Fits great.

That's consistent with what l read elsewhere.
Thanks all. I'm going to do some price comparisons as it seems that just about any of them will give good service. I'll probably wind up with one from our host which is the IMI. Price is right about in the max that I was looking to spend also.

Greg,

This is a RobbMC along with round port RA manifolds in a 68. As stated by track73 it can be clocked 360 degrees to put the terminals where you want em. I believe the Powermaster can also be clocked 360.

No end gap problem with the RobbMc, it did require shimming but not excessive.

RobbMc customer service is outstanding, he stands behind his product. I had an issue with one of his starters (Pinion Nose) that was around 6 years old but only had 3 dozen or so starts on it. I sent it back, they made the repair and had it back in under 2 weeks no charge and even covered return shipping they also included a replacement pinion nose for a second starter that was purchased but I have not yet had issues with that starter.

Thanks, that's the first installed pic l've seen of the RobbMC. The pics I've seen of the Powermaster and IMI have the lugs on the side.

I can't seem to find anyone selling RobbMC products. Do they only sell direct? I do like the made in USA aspect

I believe only direct sales as I have not seen any of their products available thru other vendors.

I've had an IMI for about 10 years and it's been flawless.

Up to about a year ago I would recommend any mini starter and usually pointed people towards the Summit starter. I'm getting reports back from several people of no-starts with the Summit after a short time in service. That problem along with a hefty price increase that pushed the Summit starter in to the same money as the IMI from Butler now has me suggesting they go with the IMI.

I have an engine on the run stand that will end up in front of a manual trans. The neutral balance flywheel hadn't arrived so I bolted up a new flexplate to break in the engine and the starter pinion to ring gear was extremely close. Was still looking around for a spacer ring when flywheel arrived. Figured I'd change over since engine was going to be in service with the flywheel. Bolted up the flywheel and clearance was fine. So reports of too close or too far might not be the fault of any given starter.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on any of the starters. The RobbMC, and thanks for the link 68GTO, looks great but is a bit more than my intended price point, so leaning towards the IMI.
And yes, at least some of the problems l found through searches were flywheel related.

Still using my Tilton Super Starter from 1989. Has been in two race cars and now a street car. Never any issues but they do not list one for Pontiac anymore.
Bought a RobbMc for my current project.

I just opened the box and I love this thing already based solely on the size and weight.

Yeah, the mini-starters are so much smaller and lighter than the clunky originals.
