I wanted to poll all of you TATA owners about the factory power antenna that your cars have. Since the mast cable tends to break after only several years of service I wanted to find out if yours is currently working and if not, have you found a replacement? Since the original style is no longer being made are you using a generic antenna? It seems that with so many late 2nd gen T/A's,Firebirds,Camaros, and I think other GM cars of that period using this antenna, there must be a market for replacements. I'm surprised no one has tried to offer a reproduction mast assembly. My 79 T/A, is ready for it's 4th replacement since I bought it new.

Warren,
I too have had problems with the GM power antenna used on the TATA. Problem is that the antenna does not like water at all. If water goes down the fender hole it slowly starts to corrode. I have bought several for my TATA and other T/A. They are not cheap for NOS. The service replacement does not look right. OK for driver. I run across NOS ones from time to time. I sent you a private email a few days back. The last NOS one cost me around $175.00. Bought it at T/A Nats last yr in Ohio. Hope that helps........... |

Power antenna update....
I was able to locate a couple NOS cable masts for the 79-81 T/A with Power antenna. Just the nylon cord with the top of the mast. This fixes most of them - I have begun repairing these darn things.(Parts limited)....Pictures available..........Email with needs. I am also buying cores......... olds sigtauswt@yahoo.com |

Hey guys, I have a 1980 & a 1979. Both had this problem. I brought it down to a freind of mine at the GM dealership. GM still makes & sells a replacement cable. It is not the original part, but it works. Basically you have to heat up & pop the cap off the end of your broken mast, cut off the very tip so you can slide off the sleeve for the cap.
The new cable kit fits perfect, you just have to cut the threaded ends off the tip, & re-install the tip from the original. I will look today to see if I can find a recept with the part number, Both of mine are working great & it only cost me $16.00 each

I bought a new power antenna fron G.M. a few years ago for my TATA. I don't know if it looks exactly like the original or not.(M.I.A. when I bought the car.) It fit great but is a pain to get to. It's been working great for several years now, but it doesn't get used much as I normally drive with the radio off.(Reason #1: the engine sounds better than the radio. Reason #2: Whose idea was it to put the darned thing on the left fender in my field of view anyway?)
Besides, the antenna is down in the fender a shows, so who sees it? |

I would agree. I pesonally don't care for the look of the antenna. my 78 has it in the windsheild. I like that look. As I restore my 68, I struggle with the antenna thing. I was considering a winsheild antrenna if its available for that car.

68Ragtop,
I don't think you will find a windshield with an antenna in it for the '68. If I'm not mistaken, G.M.'s first use of the windshield antenna was the '69 Grand Prix.(Hide-away wipers too.) |

could be. a friend of mine has a 72 GTO hard top with a winsheild antenna. Are you thinking they don't make repro's anymore? Or do the early 70's cars use a different windsheild? I am not for sure on that anyway. By the time I get that far on my restoration, I will have changed my mind about 10 times as well

Olds, I started repairing these antennas a couple of years ago. Parts are hard to find. I've been looking for a inner mast for a CB style antenna, very tough to find. The diameter of the CB style is larger then the regluar power antenna. So, if you know were I can find one let me know. I've also got one NOS power antenna left. My biggest regret was selling an orignal NOS white body one about five years ago before I got my 10th anniversary. ARGGHHH!!!
Thanks David

Hi Warren,
The only way to know what mast / rod assy fits in your antenna is to decode the rod assembly #. It is NOT a one size fits all. This is the silver tag on your mast. Not too many people kept the paper books when these slim-line antennas were discontinued. The CD roms that run the service replacement computers at GM counters do not show this breakdown. You need to find a pre 1984 GM Delco antenna catalog. I paid too much for mine and had to pry it from the guy at the swap meet. It was too much for a paper catalog...but it shows me the parts.... I sent you the right part - I have a TATA Mike |

David,
If you are looking for a mast, I need the silver # off of your old one. I can not locate mast w/o this #. Also, it may be a few weeks before I get back to you due to holidays and my travels. Best way is email: sigtauswt@yahoo.com As you know, these parts are not cheap...!!! Mike |
