When I bought my 69 goat(2 months ago), I was told that it didn't have the original engine but it was a pontiac 400. The numbers on the heads read #31. Which means it should be attached to a XP block? and came out of a 68 goat right? One of the web sites I looked at listed this combo as a RAI, is this right?
Are there any problems unique to this combo that I should be aware of? Any advice is appreciated, Thanks

The following "Ram Air I" D-port engines (built through early May 1968) used recieved the cast No.31 heads with polished nail-head valves and 1.71 installed-height dual springs.
The XP block part #9790581 was a 360 HP,4-bbl,Automatic trans. RA I '68 GTO engine. There was also a XS block part #9790577 360 HP,4-bbl,manual trans. RA I '68 GTO engine. The #31 heads aka Part No.#9792731 are pretty desireable heads! The Biggest problems you will have is poor gas mileage and tickets for "Excessive Noise by spinning of Tires"! Are you interested in selling any of the 68 parts? My car is a documented ra1 car and I am trying to put it back together. Any help is appreciated. Please email me back g68mike@aol.com
Thanks Mike

Sorry Mike. All I have from the 68 is the heads which is what I plan to use when I get to the motor portion of my resto. Which with two kids now will probably be sometime next decade or so.

Mike, I believe you spoke with Ron Johnson at Potomac Pontiac concerning the block I sold him. I also sold him some #31s yaers back, did you happen to check if he had any in his "stash"? These sometimes appear as "37"s, just like the "71 HO heads read either "191" or "197". Keep this in mind during your search.

Roger,
The 96's are RAII (round ports) , the 31's are RAI (D-ports). jamie

#96 are RA2, the #31, often mistaken for #37 are RA1 heads.

I think they are often mistaken for 37's is because the numbers are on a slant and the little swoop on the top on the "1" is quite large with no bottom line on the "1". At least that's the way mine look.
