Is it possible to have 2.11/1.77 valves installed in a set of 47 heads with some machine work? I heard the ports are the same as the #16 so would they flow as well if those valves were installed? Could they be ported to flow like the other heads? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hey, no problem, but right now the valve sizes are 1.92/1.66. The heads are the 69 350 heads. I am on a budget and I figured if I could pay to machine these heads to flow good. No sense in trying to save up to buy some #16 or such heads when the 47's could be just as good.

Well those heads are a high compression 72cc head and would probably make good power on a 400. As far as cutting them for 2.11 valves I would worry about getting into the water jacket. Are you building a 400 or the 350? I lucked out on my heads the guy I bought the car off of swapped a 400 out of a 77 T/A but stuck some nice #48 heads on it. I think I spent about $500 rebuilding my heads with new valves, springs, retainers, guides and machine work. The shop that did mine wouldn't put the hardend valve seats in for me though because they where affraid they would hit a water jacket.

Now I must show my ignorance, but I don't think you would have any kind of water jacket interference.

You can machine the heads for 2.11/1.77 valves to replace the 1.96/1.66 valves without breaking into a water jacket. There is a big difference in the amount of material that needs to be removed to install hardened seat inserts versus just opening up the existing seats for oversize valves.

The #47 head is a great candidate for porting work, most all of the high-compression '67 -'70 D-port heads have the same flow potential. The nice thing about going to the big valves is your machinist now has 'virgin' material to work with and can easily put all the valves at the same height. No sunken valves like an old worn-out big-valve head casting that has seen one or more valve jobs in its life.

That's good to know the valves will fit and the porting can be done. Can hardened exhaust seats be added too? What is done to install these? Thanks!

The 47's can be ported, but can they be ported out to what a big valve head can be ported to???

Anyone ever cc any 47's???
8.6 advertised C/R on a '69 350= mid 80's cc heads at best

I've seen some places advertise 72cc on those heads, but that can't be right. With .040 head gasket thickness and all that other stuff would be somewhere between 9-9.5:1 compression...I'm also curious as to how well these heads can be ported to flow, so if anyone has an data or can help...go for it!
