Default Dynomax 17743 & 500hp?

Anyone running the 3" Dynomax Super Turbo 17743 with an engine making in excess of 500hp?

440 stroker
Comp 248/260 SR .577/.589 113lsa (1.6 rockers)
KRE 310cfm D-ports
Tomahawk 120x230 ports
Shaker455 tune 950HP

As much as I love the sound of my Pypes RacePros with the full 3" exhaust all the way out the back... the neighbors don't. So I have to do something other than the "straight through" mufflers (MF, Goerlich, Borla) and quiet things down if I want to drive the car more often.

Thoughts? How much will the STs choke down the power of the 440?

I run those with my setup around 550 hp, 3" front to back. I think they are pretty loud and so does my neighbor 2 houses away :0.

3" exhaust with 500 hp is pretty tough to quite down.

Well that's not very encouraging! LOL

I got two Facebook comments from driving it this past weekend from neighbors who said they could hear it even though they didn't see it... so I've got to do something.

Did you notice any decrease in power with the Super Turbos?

I can't fit an X due to my BMR torque arm but I do have an H... Thinking I'll order the 3" Super Turbos and hope it quiets things down without losing any noticeable power on the street. Ultra Flows are also a straight through design like my RacePros and others...

You could add some electric cut-outs. Run quiet mufflers and the cutouts will let you be as loud as you want when you want. I have cutouts with DynoMax super turbos 2-1/2 full exhaust.

I run VT's on my 462 w 3". Can't say I get 500 hp out of my particular engine, but it should if tuned correctly. Sounds great and when yA stomp on it wow. I had violators but either them or my wife was leaving...

Check out a set of Goerlich's...that was one of Jim Hand's favorite quiet mufflers.

I do know my Ultraflows without an x pipe are very loud...

Definitely no decrease in power, at least that I can tell by the seat of the pants.

No "H" or "X" on mine, just a true dual setup from headers to exit behind rear tires. I have been told that I could be heard about a block or 2 away and I am not even on it, just driving at about 35-40 mph.

I do not think you will be quiet with these mufflers on your ride.

Just my opinion,
Mark

Another friend recommended the Goerlichs but they are also a straight through design so I'm shying away from them. VTs are out too as I called Dynomax today and they said with my cam and power they'd flap open at idle and would stay open at cruise RPMs. They also recommended the STs... I downloaded a decibel meter today and will take before and after readings with whatever I decide on.

I run the 2.5" super turbo, and is very quiet with my motor. More mellow tone compared to the previous Magnaflow. I am upgrading to 3", and am thinking VT. My cam is mild, so should be ok. I was thinking 3" super turbo, but just read this on the Summit Site...

"I like the Dynomax brand, and their design on the Super Turbo mufflers. They have a very nice sound, and the insulated wrapped body cuts down on cab resonance and the obnoxious 'cab drone' that many other mufflers have. The only issue I have with this product is it is listed as a 3" pipe; however, its not. It is a 2.5" piped muffler with 3" x 2.5" reducers welded on either side. Had I known that in the first place, I would have ordered the 2.5" and saved $12."

I have a note out to Dynomax asking if the VT is 3" all the way through. Assuming it is, probably the route I will go.

I called Dynomax about their 17743 3" dia 14" muffler... the tech said that the internal pipes are indeed a full 3" all the way through the muffler.

I also asked the tech about the VT in 3"... he said some folks with big cams that have run them find that the valve tends to "flap" with a lopey idle and with the power I have the valve would likely be open all the time at cruise/speed and would be just as loud as any other straight through muffler.

I guess if you look at our engines like an air pump... pumping a lot of air... it's tough to quiet them down as Mark stated above.

The 2.5" diameter / 20" long Dynomax is the 17749 if I remember correctly... it was the favored muffler of Jim Hand on his 11-second Pontiac station wagon and he tested several mufflers: http://www.pontiacstreetperformance....p/exhaust.html

Jim Hand also favored the X over the H but with the BMR torque arm on my car I could only fit an H and I'm doubtful that I could fit a 20" muffler under a 2nd Gen F-body.

I wish they made the 20" long muffler in a 3" but they don't so I'm restricted to using their 17743 muffler which is 3" in/out but in a 14" case like my RacePros.

There are a few 3" options here in a 20" case...

Interesting info on the vt's. When I first looked into them 2 years ago, there were complaints of a clank at idle. When I brought it up to the folks on the tech line they said that "the issue had been solved" and recommended a specific model number based on a projected 4-500 hp set up.
Nice to see they have changed their tune :/
Haven't heard a clank but often wondered if they ever actually closed. Is there a product out there anywhere from anyone that actually does what's advertised. Sheesh!

I asked about the "rattle issues" with the VT as well, he said that was with their earlier versions and that it has been addressed and fixed.

Guys with smaller cams/less power seem to really enjoy them... it all boils down to what works on your application.

Leaning more and more toward the 3" dia 14" case 17743s...

If you end up getting these, let us know how they sound and you exhaust setup.

Like I said, I have these exact ones on my setup and they are loud, not as loud as bullets, but for Super Turbo mufflers, people here me coming. Sure it has everything to do with the engine and cam.

I wish I could find my sound clip of my car idling so you can hear it, but I have no idea what i did with it or if I even have it any more. It wasn't too bad at idle, could definitely here it, but the more gas you gave it the louder it got.

Mark

Default H-pipe 3" RacePros

Here's one of mine with full 3" all the way out the back with an H and the 3" RacePros:

I LOVE the sound of it now!!!! But my neighbors don't.

I have Goerlichs on my 72 Formula and 69 GTO. Excellent performance and sound, not too loud but both are 2.5".
