Nice GP!! Makes me wish I still had my old 64.

What's even more impressive about Harrys car is the 10.13 (3000 ft ele) at that weight NORMALLY ASPIRATED!!

If I may, I would suggest adding a 2.75 planetary to the trans. They really help to get a heavy car off of the line and , of course, you still retain your nice hiway gear in the back. I have used them for over 20 years now and I just love them. I bet it would help ET considerably.
Again, one really neat and unique REAL Pontiac!

Not hijacking Les ...Steve do u mean replacing the 2.48 one then?..Just curious if i can pick up also doing that?

Yes, Replacing your stock 2.50 (2.48) first gear in your trans with a 2.75 (or even a 3.0 as I have in my '72 GTO 455HO) gives you much more acceleration even with a heavy car and mild hiway gears. The low planetary gear sets also have a 1.60 second too.
You can compare your advantage by some simple arithmetic. Multiply your first gear in your trans by your rear gear ratio. then do it again with the low first gear to compare. My '72 GTO runs a 2.56 12 bolt POSI and a 3 to 1 low first gear instead of the standard 2.50. My car accelerates like it has 3.73 gears until I click into drive and I am back to 2.56s for high speed cruising, less engine noise and wear and better mileage which equates to a longer range. Since Pontiacs have broader torque curves than most engines, the wider gear spreads with the low planetaries do not have a disadvantage as they might would with a sbc as an example. I use a bigger gas tank too.
These gear sets are great esp for heavy cars with mild gearing and with mild to med power. They cost less than a 77r4 and you still keep the strength of a 400 thm. I have broken a few of them too but, ,mainly in heavier towing applications. I don't recommend or use them anymore to tow anything heavier than, say, a 19 foot boat. They are great for street and street/strip.
Les- "skunkworks?" he he I like it!

Default low gear set

Steve Barcak: ditto on what you described with the gearset ,i use them now on my builds,so i can avoid to go to 2004r or 700r4 trans.
except one thing ,the originator of these low planetery gear set which is www.Kilgoretrans.com (John Kilgore) here in sun valley Ca. ,now he makes them much more stronger than the early non rebuilduble versions,i use it in my race car with no problems.

Les: sounds like you have "POORMANS OVERDRIVE" project listed on your christmas list.

Kool!!! I talked to a local builder here and he uses the ones out of the big snap on trucks etc....he says it drops it almost 1 point? Also says they wine a little in that first gear cause of the pitch or something of them, but once u hit second all is quiet again... does that sound about right?...So with my stock gears now 3.23's what would this equate to then with the 2.75 gearset?as far as ratio..Harry i went to the website i didnt see any pricing for just the gear sets?
thanks!!!

grandville455, to answer your question, going to a 2.75 1st versus a 2.48 gives you an equivalent of having a 3.58 rear in place of your 3.23. It is simply the ratio of 2.75 over 2.48 multiplied by 3.23.

grandville455:the Snap On truck and motorhomes from factory do not use low gear sets ,its the same 2.48 ratio except that they are straight cut for more strenght ,thats all and being staight cut thats why they are noisy .

call John Kilgore and tell him i recomended you and hell give "good guy" price.
he basicly supplies almost all of the transmission industry and all of them repackage them with their names .

not to hijack Les's car thread ,

grandville455: the one TCI makes is the same low gear of 2.75 ratio ,but its the light duty version like Kilgore's old non rebuildable ones ,i don't know whats your intended -application use will be ,but if its light duty use, yes you can buy the TCI one (i personally had experience with theirs) .

Thumbs up Big Poncho makes BIG impression!

Nice going Les.

Guys 'n gals, if you saw this car in person you'd be even more impressed. Every inch of this car is immaculate, just like all of the Pontiacs that are in his stable. Congrats on the great track times, see ya next year at PDD race #1.

Hmmm.....a race car with eight lugs and fender skirts. I like.

If you guys think Les' car is immaculate, you should see his skin. I think he uses Oil of Olay.
