Just read that we lost another great musician. Like them or not, The Band was a group of very talented musicians who honed their skills in Woodstock, NY, not far from my family's summer place up in the Catskill mountains. Robbie Robertson wrote a lot of their songs, and also did soundtrack work on some of Martin Scorsese"s films.
Think I'll dig up "The Last Waltz" & play it in his honor. |

They had a remarkably unique style. No one at all sounds like them. "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is probably my favorite of their works.

Agreed, part of that unique sound was having 3 singers, a great organ player, and Robbie playing on guitar...... but I'm going to have to say "the shape I'm in" or "stage fright" were always the favorites for me.

RIP Robbie, 'The Band' was a very inspirational group for me, I loved most everything from them, truly timeless.
The Weight is one of my personal favorites, from Woodstock - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64JdzV4_rDI If you prefer the album version, which most are familiar with - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLFAQuWFcTo I also like Robbie's participation in Playing For Change - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph1GU1qQ1zQ Playing For Change is a wonderful organization, they have a Youtube channel and a website dedicated to breaking down barriers and bringing people together through music. Anyone can become a member. https://www.playingforchange.com/ Frank

RIP, Robbie. Great band, unique sound. A group of 30 local musicians perform a tribute every year around Thanksgiving, performing the "Last Waltz" start to finish with a full orchestra. They sell out the Masonic Temple every year for 25 years, about 3000 seats. It's a fantastic musical experience. The music from the band will live on for a long time to come. Condolences to his friends and family.

I got to see them live at Watkins Glen in 1973. Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers also played at that outdoor rock concert.

Another one of the GREATS gone! I have always loved the Band, so many great songs....The Weight is probably also my favorite. They started out as Bob Dylan's backup band. I will also be watching "The Last Waltz" tonight! God Bless Bill https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...closed.614419/

Best concert I ever attended!!The Band in the 80"s in Columbus Ohio with all the original members, small venue with about 10K audience. Sounded just like there albums! Had a table just off the stage with a small audience, best concert I have ever been to!

I have a bootleg Allman Brothers CD from the Beacon Theater in NYC (2012) that has an excellent version of "It Makes No Difference". Warren Haynes on vocals & guitar, with a horn section and a backup female vocalist.
Goes to show you the influence that The Band had on so many musicians. |

Here u go tiger gto. Wish I had been there in Watkins Glenn. Epic festival. I was only 2.
And as of more recently at the infamous Capitol theater- I was there for that. Proverbial super star list warren got all these different band leaders to do this tour. Jamey Johnson had the LH Arkansas twang for sure. Incredible. |

In the movie, The Band's version of the song was used. On the soundtrack album a version of the song by a different group was used due to contractual reasons.
