New Header Options for 78 TA?
I have a 5spd Tremec w/ a 400 - E Heads - back in the day the only thing that bolted up was Hooker 4202 headers. They are way too low to the ground....
Any other options coated out there now ? Thanks, Chris |

I did a tranny install last week on a 78 T/A that had "shorty" headers on it. They appeared to be very well made, and offered a lot of room compared to full length headers.....Cliff

The Hookers aren't too bad I autocrossed with them and 23" tall road race slicks and never did drag. I've had poor luck with Hedman's fitting especially with collector angles either the 1 3/4 or the 1 7/8. 1 7/8 did fit better. Might look at the Tri Ys Ron(Tribal Tubes) is making but there can be a wait-possibly long-see thread in Exhaust section. They are probably the best shot if you are looking for the best ground clearance.

Rant-
I've got super comps on multiple cars and they are all flattened (I like my car in the weeds for auto cross and road course)..... The tri Y's sound good,,,, but I'm not prepared to wait until Christ becomes a cowboy for the second time and I sure as Hell don't need to adopt another expense as suggested on that Header deal.... That all said I may look at starting to produce a big tube stepped Header with the major focus being ground clearance... It is my opinion that while there are many really great manufactures out there for general parts,,,, the header side of our cars has been like a long forgotten stepchild,,, and the market may just be there for a new boutique manufacture of headers... We'll be building a custom set of headers for my 474 motor with convertible CV-1 heads in the next week or two so maybe we'll build (and build a jig) a set of custom headers on the existing motor in the car prior to removing it (BTW it's a 400 stroked to 461 and has a set of round port edelbrocks on it)... Rant over sorry |

Yeah I did drop my frontend a little as well (drop spindles) and I've flattened out the headers pretty good already. I've grown excellent at knowing what dips will make my butt pucker and which ones won't.
I know I'd have to pull the freakin motor to do it, but it would be worth it to me to finally have something that would work, minus killing my bank account. Keep me informed please.

I was going to order the Tribal Tri-Y headers too but was unsure about the "actual" wait time so I put some cheap Summit 4 tubes on over a year ago as a temporary measure to get me by for now. Yes they are kind of low. I'll be looking at Tribal again or any other "new" headers next summer.

No "shorties" for round port engines (Eheads),D-ports only,so that option is out.
Maybe look into the maddogs Chris? He (Mark) has both 1 7/8" and 2" primary headers for the second gen birds. HTH Bret P. |

I totally agree with Tazzz2. Seems like the majority of the headers available are A body headers that also just happen to fit F cars. My passenger side headers sit a few inches lower than the driver side. They have some pretty gnarly road rash already and I have about 500 miles on the car. I want the nose to sit about 1" lower than where it is now but I know I'll be replacing the exhaust also if I lower it anymore.

How about Dougs headers?

Dave Hall from Restore A Muscle Car may be producing high-quality, good fitting Tri-Y headers in the near future.

Have a set of the Hedman 1 7/8 (actually are a 1 3/4-1 7/8 stepped on their 1 7/8 pattern you are welcome to pick up and test fit. They actually have decent bolt access.
