Default TV shopping again

4 year old Samsung 61" DLP picture is fading out. TV repair shop says maybe the lamp?
$200. Suggests throwing it away. And don't buy another DLP.
Recommends an LED or LCD.

If it's the lamp, you can easily replace it your self for around $50. Post the model number, we can find the lamp.

On the back lower right side, there is a door to access the lamp. Usually 1 or 2 screws, remove door, take out lamp, seat new lamp, make sure temperature switch is positioned correctly (light blue switch), put cover back on, done.

Looking around, Amazon has the best prices. Looks like yours can come with the housing as well, but it does raise the price slightly. Mine I got just the lamp for around $38 shipped. In any case, here's a few options. Replacememnt videos are available on youtube or samsungs site.

My DLP gave up the ghost just before Christmas. it started developing tiny white dots across the screen. I replaced it with a 60" Sharp Aquos and am glad I did! The DLP puts out a lot of heat from the lamp and uses a lot of power compared to the LEDs.
Also, the picture on the Sharp is........... well, sharp!

Great info, thanks. But after having a chat with Samsung it appears my TV doesn't have a trap door and is not user serviceable. Lucky me. I can ship it to Springfield, IL & they will fix it for a slight fee, sure. $1800 tv lasted 4 years, ouch.

Are you sure? I am pretty sure even the slim models have access to the lamp.

Even if you need to take the whole back cover off, it's only a few screws and simple. Hate to see you toss a perfect tv.

Our 50" Samsung DLP has been perfect since we got it in 2007. If my kids aren't watching movies or playing Xbox through it, they are using it as an all night night lite for sleep-overs. I keep waiting on the bulb to dim, but as of yet...........

I have a 2005 vintage 42" Samsung DLP. The bulb went out last year, and I replaced it. It was pretty easy. Unfortunately ours has started to occasionally shut itself off. Not sure if it's temperature related or what. It still works 99.9% of the time, so I'll keep using it.

Randomly shutting off could be as simple as the door switch where the lamp goes (if applicable). Most are blue and if not seated correctly, will give a false overheat signal. Some actually warp a little due to normal heat in the enclosure.

Could also be the ballast but I'd check the switch first.

Wow, thanks for the advice. I'll try and check that as soon as I get a chance.

Ya know, the slim dlp sets may have the lamp door on one of the sides. I should have thought of that before. Check either side or snap some pics.

just to let you know, there was a class action recall on yours a few weeks back. If yours has that symptom, it's a free fix.

I just bought an LG 55" LED 3D. We like it and there is a huge difference in the amount of heat coming off it. Compared to our 42" LG LCD, it is about 20 times less.

We bought a 46" Mitsubishi LED, last summer. Great picture and it runs on 114 watts, it runs really cool. I can see it lasting a real long time since it runs cooler than my laptop.

Dead on. I saw the door on the left, 1 screw, looked inside, that can't be it, but it was.
Talked to a tech today & he talked me through it. A blind man could do it. Guess I need thicker glasses. Ordered the bulb from Samsung.com $150 shipped. I will let ya know what happens.
Thanks PY & Bl1tzw1ng for the info.
