Front loaders have been around since the 60's. Too much soap in any machine gives you the crud and mold smells.

I don't know how long ago you had your front loader or what brand it was, but I got my first front loader (Frigidaire) in about 2000. Moved it to our new home in 2005 and replaced it with the current LG unit around 2014/15.

Once again, I would never go back to the noisy, water guzzling, hard on clothes top loader.
My washer and dryer were LG's. We had no issue with the dryer but the washer was horrible. We replaced it before a failure, we just couldn't take the odors any longer.

We had a front load washer and dryer and my wife did not like the washer at all. It wouldn't get the clothes clean so I bought a set of Samsung top load washer and dryer with the steam functions. I sold the front loaders to a guy I worked with and I told him up front about the problems my wife had. When he came to pick them up, I unhooked the washer and found our problem. When the delivery guy installed them he hooked the water up backwards, Hot to cold and vise versa. But I already had the new ones sitting in the garage and the buyer had already sold his set so I stuck to the deal. Then, it turned out that there was a recall on the new washer because they were exploding! We were offered a new Samsung unit or an allowance toward another make. Since the dryer was giving us no problems we chose the new Samsung.
My wife can barely reach the bottom of the washer but we are going to stick with them until they expire. My next set will be Speed Queen top loaders.

More like the 40's, Bendix had a bolt down front load washer.

Our first washer dryer when we got married was Speed Queen. Those units were indestructible. Lasted decades! We only used the front loader for a 3-4 years and replaced the washer.

We've had a front load Electrolux set now for 13 years. No problems. We do clean the door seal and run a cleaning cycle once a month or so.

I love mine, works great. Worth every penny IMHO.
