1980 pace car cylinder head question
301 Turbo motor
Just got my heads back from the machine shop Joe from TTA Performance (Great Guy and a 80 81 expert) told me about the putting the small freeze out plugs in the heads to block off the emission gasses that went through the head / not using the cross over tubes going to cut slightly short to give the look I'm using them when installed.. Question 1 are the big open holes for freeze plugs if so what is the Dorman Number Question 2 there are what look like small freeze plugs reversed on the back side of the heads were they coolant passages Thank you in Advance, As always Last edited by 8453johng; 07-07-2021 at 10:09 PM. |

The puzzle unfolds / after research / and internet found this:
Brass Freeze Plugs for V8 Pontiac Cylinder Heads. 301 326 360 389 400 421 428 455 V8 Cylinder Heads. Includes: (4) 1 3/8 in. Brass Freeze Plugs / Believe to be Dorman 565-025 / These are the large ones that go on the side of the heads? (2) 1 13/64 in. should probably ask him what plugs he suggests if you want to use those, not many 301t guys on here
i did this mod a long time ago when i did a subframe off resto of my 81 pacecar. the better way to do it is to actually tap the hole for a threaded bolt/plug. you can keep the stock look with the pipes & mounting plate in place & not cut the pipes. i also just gutted the smog pump instead of messing with a different pulley & belt like some do, it's much easier that way & keeps the stock look with the smog pump solenoids in place. kinda hard to see in this pic but the small hole is what gets plugged for the emission gasses, the bigger holes use normal metal/brass freeze plugs that the machine shop should have installed when the heads were redone. |

going to push the 2 front alum freez plugs in further so I do not have to cut the pipe. Will look much better than cut As Always Thanks |
