Default steering column ?

Hey there, the steering wheel on my 65 rubs on the steering column. I can pull the steering wheel away from the column, that just flexes the rag joint. Is there a way I can set the steering wheel to be away from the column?

I was thinking something is worn that the steering wheel has moved down. I really don't want to move the column down. There was space between these two years ago. I hoped someone had taken theirs apart and knew what might have happened. Guess I'll take it apart and find out.

The other end of the turnbuckle is attached to the cylinder head. It is for stopping engine movement during racing.

Back in the day F-bodies had an issue with the motor mount breaking, the acellerator linkage (not a cable) binding, and the linkage jamming at WOT. The general added a chain.

I remember trying to explain that to a LEO.

The inner shaft has likely slid forward/downward This is common with old GMs.
You should only have to loosen the shaft "clamp" and the under dash support bracket just enough to slide the shaft back up to get the factory clearance,
and then just tighten everything back down.

Here is the '66 spec, but yours should be similar.

I loosened the bolt/clamp at the rag joint and pulled the steering wheel away from the column. Now I have the clearance needed.

In the picture below, is that sleeve something like an inner race, for the lower bearing? I assume it needs to go up in past the dust seal into a bushing or bearing. I tried to push it up, not to forcibly, and it did not go.

Also, Mr Hamlin, my wife and I laughed after reading your signature, very funny.

I seem to remember that mine got loose and started having some play. I had someone pull the steering wheel out while I reached in and Re-tightened the connection at the rag joint.

Remember in a tilt column there were three long bolts that got loose.

Yes, the lower Clamp (RED ARROW) has to be loosed and slid up.
This holds the shaft in place as well as seats the Bearing(Green Dot) into the plastic retainer.

Hard to tell from the image but it appears your bearing be failing. It is a one-piece assembly.
The last 3 images are of aftermarket replacement offerings.

Thank you. I slid the lower clamp down, for photo purposes. I don't remember how long the bearing ( green dot ) has not been inserted all the way up into the plastic retainer ( I slid it down a little for the photo), several years I suppose.

Do you know what happens if I take the bolts out, one shown above your yellow arrow ( on the black part of the column ) the other 180 degrees ( under ) from that one? Will the plastic retainer/bearing aasy slide down to help with inserting the bearing ( green dot ) ?

The white plastic "ADAPTOR" (Per Parts Book) has two purposes one is the hold the outer tube "JACKET" centered on the shaft as well as house the lower bearing.
If you remove that bolt the Adaptor is able to slide out/down.
However It has been my experience with these that they become extremely brittle and will easily break if not handled with care.
There really seems to be no reason to remove yours unless something not shown in pic is wrong with it.

The only piece that I don't find in the parts book is the ring/retainer with the green dot.
At first, it looked to be part of the bearing but after looking closer your bearing appears to be complete and seated correctly in the adaptor.

If your lower bearing isn't coming apart and/or grinding I would wipe it down and just apply a small amount of bearing grease with a swab.
Then just push the clamp back up and lock it down.

If your bearing is of issue then you will need to remove the complete column assembly to make corrections.

I think you are correct, that sleeve ( green dot ) is not part adaptor. The metal bearings inner race, inside of the plastic, is tight against steering shaft. I do have 1/32" movement when I pull up and down on the shaft by that adaptor and the same when I pull up and down with the steering wheel. When I move the steering wheel up and down, the shaft by the adaptor does not move. Is the steering shaft a 2 piece unit?

Thank you for the great pictures!
