Doing some Port work on 4X heads
Got things lined up with the machine shop to work my 4X heads. They will be adding liners, cut guides down to .530, and install 2.11 valves (up from the 1.96). So after they get to this point I will do some bowl work , a little port matching and pushrod budge adjustments BEFORE they do the valve job.
My ? is: With these being 98 cc i can see how they RAISED the valve seat area higher up into the head (compares to my #62) .... IS THE PORT ROOF/WATER jacket area at the same level as my #62's. The last thing I want to do is make a sprinkler system out these in the bowl trying to get things opened up and shaped. I am NOT trying to make these things flow 290 cfm but boy they look BAD compared to my others and expect they look worse once the 2.11 vvalves are in. I will be trying to figure out how to load pics...currently that is a big FAIL for me here. |

This what you want to shoot for with the intake port common wall and the push rod bulge.
Notice that in the right side port in the photo that the common wall has been kicked over .050” as can be seen by how wide the roof path is and how squared off it is. Note that this added width runs all the way thru the valve bowl and meets up with the rear wall of the valve bowl . The push rod bulge has been opened up to .998” and most importantly cut into a constant radius.

Can’t see it very clearly on the 62’s, but I can see the valve stem still in the guide with no intake head. Would guess that is another 2 piece valve failure, pretty much destroy’s everything. We had a 13 from someone’s 70 GTO that looked similar.
For the most part the water jackets are in the same place between the 4x and the 62, chamber is lower on the 62’s making the bowl deeper and the short turn longer. Last edited by Jay S; 07-25-2021 at 11:08 PM. Reason: Add |

the DEAD valve was a 5.2 long Ferrea.....dual springs 120 seat 340 over the nose FTH ....
Yeah I figured since the chambers were "raised" I would not get as much short turn length on these... |

Got a single 62 if you need one. It's mate I hit water in the exhaust port practicing! You can NOT grind on both sides of the exhaust guide!

67Fbird, which head are you talking about in your second paragraph?

the 4x head. The short turn from the floor to the seat is pretty short in comparison to the 62's. I am guessing about .100 difference. 27 years ago when I did the work on them there was enough vertical between the seat and the floor to get almost a 90* worth of large radius. These 4X will not have as smooth of transition from floor to seat.
I have NO CLUE which valves they were. Given the purchase was back in like 1994 ..ish from BULTLER. Back pre-internet days when circulation was by a handshake at the drag strip and a phone number. Thanks Skip...I have a "spare" SET of #62 VIRGIN heads that i will probably sell once I get this motor going.. After a full teardown of the heads on my dead engine...the valve guides were WORN completely out ?(I intalled bronze liners and machined guides for lift AND teflon seals)?? I mean there was probably .012-.015 valve head movement??? That motor may have been OLD but it wasn't ran very much as it mostly just SAT while I got divorced, moved 3 times and stayed broke trying to get my career back up. Thanks for the insight guys...new plan. (again) The more data i collect the more fluid the situation gets. So 2 of the cast pistons were bad (1 cracked skirt, 1 cracked ring land) Then some EXCELLENT data... my "spare" #62 heads are in GREAT shape guides are really good ...even with the worn valves... so since I will need pistons anyway...I just get forged -17 cc dished and run my #62 heads that only need valves and valve job. YAY....I'm UP $300 but definitely a better bottom end (once i swap out ALL the rods from the 455...3 spun bearings and 1 beaten one for my re-cond rods) Just hope the crank makes it at .030.....or .040
