The switch itself should be mounted on top of the steering column, requiring you to unbolt it from the dash framework and lower it to more easily gain access.

Purple THICK 2 wire connector.
It is on top of the steering column (AUTO) with the reverse light switch.
On a standard this 2 prong switch is on the clutch pedal bracket.
Edit. There were No Std shift birds in 1980

The 80 neutral/saftey function is not the same as 78 and older. The older ones use an electrical n/s switch that interupts the power feed to the starter, when the trans isn't in park or neutral, so it won't start.

The advice given so far does not apply to an 80.

An 80 doesn't have a electrical neutral/saftey switch. The neutral/saftey function changed to being a mechanical lock out of the ignition cylinder inside the column in the 79, 80, and 81's. So, there is no wiring for a neutral/safety switch for 79-81's.

It only has a back-up light switch. The back-up light switch looks much like a n/s switch, and is in the same location. There should be a 2 terminal plug to plug onto the 2 terminals on the back-up light switch. The plug should have at least one green wire on it, which will help you identify it.

Here's a pic of the 79-81 back-up light switch. The red arrow shows the 2 spades for the connector. I think the connector is black with a green and a purple wire on it.

As a point of interest, here's the notice in the 79 pontiac service manual about the change in the column in the 79 pontiac f-body:

Still shown on p8 of ebay ad and described from 1980 wiring diagram. If John wants a copy of this diagram, possibly on the site as a sticky, otherwise PM me.

Yes, early photo was from my 1978 and in most cases would have allowed someone to find something similar. Mine wasn't even on the steering column but the shifter, didn't figure that would throw people based on other links included, which anyone could have searched for.

An 80 doesn't have a electrical neutral/saftey switch. The neutral/saftey function changed to being a mechanical lock out of the ignition cylinder inside the column in the 79, 80, and 81's. So, there is no wiring for a neutral/safety switch for 79-81's.

Interesting that my 79 Camaro still had the dimmer on the floor and the 81 Z28 tilt column I swapped in it also did not have dimmer on turn signal and park/reverse switch was still on column.

Default Thanks for all the help

Thanks for letting us know 1980 is different

I see the photo that shows the 1980 n/s with the 2 spade connectors

I have looked online and have not been able to see where I can buy the 2 spade connector ns switch

Any help on where to buy the correct 1980 n/s switch would be gratefully appreciated.

When looking for one, remember to look for a back-up light switch, not an n/s switch.

Check with second gen graveyard here: https://secondgengraveyard.com/

He's also second gen graveyard on facebook.

I believe this switch is the correct reverse light switch ??????????????

O Riley's: NS 21

Photo attached

Here is an EPAY description looks a little tricky to install

New Standard neutral safety switch. This is also a multi-function switch, which lets the vehicle know if it's in Park/Nuetral, Drive or Reverse, so it is also the reverse light switch. These switches require adjustment when replacing one. The adjustment is done by loosening the 2 screws and and checking the shifter position through each gear to ensure the switch is properly located on the column then tightening the screws. If the switch is not adjusted properly, the vehicle will not start. This is a 5-pin switch (78 and older use a 7-pin switch). Fits the following:

Any help greatley appricated

79-81 Camaro (all models w/ Automatic transmission)
79-81 Firebird/Trans Am (all models w/ Automatic transmission)

I've never seen a 7 spade n/s switch. That 5 spade switch looks like any of the 78-older n/s switches I have.
But if you can't find one with just the 2 back-up light spades on them, like in my earlier pic, then I don't see why one of those earlier switches won't work for just the back-up lights. You just wouldn't connect anything to the other spades.
It's not hard to install, and you don't have to worry about the adjustment for the car to start, since that doesn't apply to 79-81's. You won't have any starter wires connected to it. Just connect the back-up light wires to the 2 horizontal spades. Then turn the key to "on"( but not running), so you can move the shifter to reverse, and then slide the switch one way or the other until the back-up lights light up, and lightly tighten the screws. Then it's adjusted. Keep in mind you have to have the "back-drive" linkage from the transmission to the bottom lever on the steering column all there and adjusted too, since that's how the column "knows" it's in reverse.
