thanks for confirming they are not stock guys. Give me comfort that I've got a bit better than stock down there. I understand that is the weak link on these engines...and yes, I will be mostly street, but will have some fun with it too...

And yes, those numbers stamped in the rods are the total bob weight of the Rod, piston , wrist pin and rings for balancing purposes.

After listening and reading a lot of feedback about my cam selection and the newly found information of the engine being a 461 and not a 421 - as well as having the 60916 cam previously in it that frankly sounded stock at idle - I am going to move up a bit from the 60243. As those in the market know - there is no inventory of cams out there. Crower, Lunati, Howard, Comp, etc. All of them do not have Pontiac cores, or at least anything in the range I am looking for. So I have these guys https://www.camcraftcams.com/ doing a custom cam for me. 234/242 @ .50 and .533/.533 with a 1.65 rocker. Will be a 112 LSA to hopefully give me enough vacuum for power brakes. Should be here in two weeks.

And I am going to Norwalk, so if anything there I might pick up a back up.

had not even dawned on me to call autozone. i feel like a fool. well horse has left the barn. maybe that couple extra points on duration and lift might mean something. at least that's what ill tell myself. the salt in the wound is that autozone has a sale right now. cam would have cost me $99....

Here is the latest issue. Figured I would take the ram air manifolds out and open them up a bit, plus paint to freshen up. Passenger side come out after I jacked block up a bit, but drivers side is a bit tougher. Seems like two options, I can try add jack block up more, I’ve got a 2x4 across the bottom of the oil pan, but I am a little worried I might break something going higher. Distributor is out so will not hit firewall but was worried about tranny/drive shaft? Option b seems to unhook the steering column rod thingy at the rag joint and move the whole rod out of the way. I thought I recall seeing somewhere that thing is spring loaded and tricky? Have never removed that before.

Which option would u pick?

So when you unbolt it from the head pipe and drop the starter out you still can’t get it out from dropping it down?

Z bar is in way coming down. I unhooked rag joint and that gave me enough clearance…slowly but surely…

Polish out all the internal rust from them that you can and grind the inlet a tad larger then the exh ports at least on the floors if you can.

Got it. Exhaust manifolds are good.

Starting to get back together as u can see by pics. I started to get set up to degree cam and noticed that the lifters are not very centered on the cam lobes. Is that normal? I’ve got cam retaining plate on and have cam bolt with eccentric finger tight. Some of those lifters are close to the wrong lobe. Is this all normal or am I missing something?

Check end play on camshaft I dont know the exact specs off top of my head but it's very little like .004 to .008........ if you dont have a dial indicator the play s/b barely noticeable by necked eye

Ok I will take a look at end play. I suspect I screwed something up. Turns out my degree numbers are crazy too, so I am starting over on this part of job.

Anyone ever seen this? Just noticed this weird ring on the cam bolt. Looks like it may limit depth. I am going to torque 40lbs and see if it takes it all

Cam bolt took 40lbs no issue, so I’ll leave it as is. Having some measuring challenges icl that I have documented on another 60919 degreeing thread. I’m close though

That looks like sealer of some sort on that bolt and the threads don’t look too great either!

It would be real cheap insurance to replace it before you slap on the timing cover!

Might be the thread locker paste u see, it’s a pretty good bolt.

I got the degreeing sorted after some challenges on my part, but dot to dot it came in at 109. So no further adjustment needed

Just dropped head on to look at push rod length and piston to valve clearance. Seems the dowel holes in these new heads need some minor clean up as the head does not sit flat on block as the dowels are not fully inserting into their holes. I will asking kre, but assume I just need to carefully clean up the holes in the heads to secure a better fit. The holes do appear to have a slight taper.

U might see the small gap on the back of the head- it’s not sitting flush.

The other thought I had was that torturing them down would probably push the dowel past the taper and then since up the head?

I did not put gasket on yet as I wanted to check piston to valve as well. So this is bare metal to metal.

I’ve got cometic .40 though
