Default New 463 in the Trans Am

Fired the new 463 earlier today. Had my son and grandson watching and listening for anything out of the ordinary. Went off without a hitch except right at the beginning when a big backfire thru the carb got our attention. Advanced the timing and all was well. Ran at 2000rpm for 20 minutes with no other issues. Even with a roller cam these break-in procedures give me the jitters! All forged bottom end, solid roller at 262/270 and .640 lift. KRE d-ports at 325 and Northwind intake to match. Quick Fuel 950 carb. Temp never got above 180 and oil pressure settled in at 40 psi after about 15 minutes into the run, 30 wt oil. Would like to get some opinions on the plugs. I know that 20 minutes at a steady 2000 rpm doesn't tell a whole lot but they look to me like the mixture is a little rich. Not sooty, but not as clean as I would have expected. Pictures aren't great but the best I could do. Any thoughts?

When is the next time it will idle at 2000 RPM? It was under no load. Put so new plugs in it and drive it and see what those plugs look like.

You can not tell much by 20 min at 2000RPM. Warm it up, run your valves, change your oil and go out and hammer it. Stop and go driving for awhile.
Plugs tend to clean up after your run the engine hard.
Why did you break it in like it was a flat tappet cam ? You do not have to.
A 02 sensor was a great investment for me. Just look down and see where you are at.
Good luck with it, she should to run very well.

If it where me at this point I would be far more concerned right now with cutting the filter open and seeing what hopefully is not inside it then with judging how the plugs look !

At this time you should also start a base line log book about the new motor starting with doing a cranking compression test on the motor once warm, and putting a timing light on the motor and noting plus logging in where the advance curve really starts to kick in and confirming at what rpm it levels off ,as it should not climb above 42 degrees with no vacuum advance hooked up.

I hope you find that all checks well with your new Baby!

Yea, I know I need to drive it first under load and varying rpm ranges before much can be said about the plugs but I just threw it out for some input. Will take a look at the filter today and dial in the timing at least at some baseline, maybe 32 degrees total. Hope to able to get it on the road Friday. Will update things at that time.
