Rebuilding and painting a tilt column
I'm in the process of rebuilding a tilt column for my '70 Bonneville to replace
the original non-tilt column. As part of the rebuild, I'd like to get a fresh coat of paint on it. The color is dark brown, and based on the website below, the paint code is Lucite 9702L. http://www.oldride.com/library/1970_..._catalina.html Any suggestions for a readily available match to this color? Or is my best bet to head to the local custom paint shop and see if they can mix me a match to this Lucite paint code? -Scott

I bought paint for my column in an aerosol from APS Tower:
http://www.apstowerpaint.com/categor...-mixed-paint/3 They custom matched to the original paint code like you found. I used their lacquer. Color match and gloss were both pretty good, but I needed a black primer. They might also be able to mix an enamel. I am pretty sure I used semi-gloss, but I noticed you think flat is what you need. I first made a mistake and put it on top of a 1K primer, which didn't go well. I stripped and primed again with black epoxy, which then worked well. Good luck whatever you do. |

Thanks for the link to APS - looks like a great resource for this project.
After looking at my original column and the donor column a bit closer, I think you're probably right that this is more likely a semi-gloss than a flat. I suspect they just look flat from years of use and wear. I think at this point, I'm going to have my local shop mix up the Lucite 9713L and I'll give it a test spray.
