.763 is way too much. Can you figure out what the short base is, if the long base is .47"? Do the numbers calculate out close for the newer belt at .44", .30" and .30"?

My figure/answer was wrong.
I didn't figure the angle right on one of the triangles.

I got .4936898"

With the 36º angle of the belt (if that is correct angle? it's what I'm basing this on) add this to whatever the smaller parallel (short base) dimension is: .24368978
(short base is .250 in diagram you made)

Slanted sides?

Short base and altitude (height).

The .49" is close enough, because the .25" number was probably a little off I'm sure.

I have to believe the 3/8" number Quanta was referring to was the height of the belt, not the width at the top of the belt, which is what this exercise was about.

That could be.

Would make the belt a 'half inch' wide belt probably.

I believe they called it 1/2" in the catalog, when it was really .47". Then they started calling them 7/16" when the .44" came out.

Well, that was kind of surprising.
I would have thought the '75 MVMA (the new name for the AMA) still showed the earlier values. 1976 was the first year it showed the newer values.

I haven't logged on here in a while, but if anyone is interested in a Genuine GM 478012 I have one left. The part number is molded into the belt, too, not ink stamped on it. It reads GM 478012 PQ and then a tiny Gates stamp inside of the oval. This is the belt that runs the A/C compressor.

I found this which looks like it's from a 1972 manual.

Also, here is a link to the Grand Prix Chapter of POCI page which has information on PONTIAC TIMING COVERS, PULLEYS, & ACC BRACKETS as well as sheets from manuals specifically for belts and pulleys for 64 - 71 Pontiacs.

I want to thank Pepi (Karl) for a fantastic bearing replacement job on my sealed idler pulley. Quick turnaround and it now runs silent! And a very reasonable price too. Thanks Karl!

You are welcome Brad, glad you are happy with it. It will last a lot longer than original I used sealed bearings on both sides not just the one side, keeps the grease from slinging out into the pulley. That is why I personally think the originals go bad, slings the grease and then the bearing runs dry.

To add some info to this 80 amp thread I am attaching the photos of the original A/C and PS belts that are on my 80 amp alternator equipped 73 SD. I still need to find an original alternator belt for the car.

I crawled around the car today and discovered that I had two of the three original belts on the car, and not just one.

So what I need is the 80 amp alternator belt if anyone can assist. Here are the photos of the original AC belt and the original power steering belt.

478012 is the A/C belt with a WH and V2K code
483133 is the PS belt with a N9 and V2 code

and the aftermarket 80 amp alternator belt just for length info (15515 -1193 12)

I'm trying to get the belts gathered up for the Black Car. I understand that Quanta doesn't make a correctly coded belt for the Alt or PS applications, but has anyone checked to see if they have belts of the correct length and width for these applications? I'm thinking if I have to have a non-original GM belt, I would at least like it to look appropriate.

Talked with Craig at Quanta. Not very helpful. He says they have no belts between 50" and 52.25" regardless of PN or date code.

Bob, so the manufacturer of these belts have no way of making them for us, as I'm sure Quanta is just the marketer?

I have bought replacements from NAPA in the past when I had the 80 amp system on a 72. I believe I have an original that got cut with side cutters ( not by me) . The Napa belts could have been Gates and made in Canada .

HFR - I'm sure the manufacturer could make whatever length belt he was asked to make. Craig at Quanta, however, had no interest in having them make any belts beyond those that he currently carries. It's a shame everyone has such apathy. Just like trying to get the correct glovebox tire sticker. Most folks could care less. Makes you wonder how they ever started a business.
