Default FUEL TANK SENDING UNIT PART NUMBER FOR 1971 TRANS AM

Hi all, I'm trying to find the correct part number for my sending unit. I looked at the assembly manual and it's hard to read.

Looks like either 6428815 or 6428615

Does anyone know?

On a related issue, my fuel gauge drops very quick from full and gets close to E and I still have 6 gals or so......any ideas on that?

Thanks!!!

Long story long...........about two years ago I scored a NOS sending unit & used it on the '73. It was much more inaccurate than the one I was replacing. Left me stranded a few miles from home reading a strong 1/4 tank, but was totally empty. So I bought one of the repro units which proved to be a big disappointment too. Stays on full forever & then drops like a rock until it runs out of gas reading about 1/8 tank full. There must be a better choice out there some where.

Wow, that blows. I guess staying with mine is a wise choice. One day i'll pull it out and clean it.

1981 305 chevy can be used on a 74 with just a little tweak, not sure what the difference is on a 73, but I sure there is one

Fuel tanks and senders are way different between '70-'73 and '74-'81.

There are two replacement senders on the market. The Canadian Spectra Premium Inc and and a Chinese original appearing reproduction. I've heard nothing good about the Chinese version.

Yeah, I've heard that too, but have no idea how to I.D. one from the other. Is there any obvious appearance differences?

All I'm saying is, some things can be found in newer cars. Like my 1990 miss Shelby, they don't make the brake hardware anymore, but the 07 neon is an exact match.
