I need the factory correct GOLD color and code for the 1977, 78 snowflake wheels. Someone told me pacer gold but it doesn’t look right to me.

Thank you! I’ve seen all kinds of different shades of gold on cars, some look better then others, but I do want as close to factory as possible. I always thought the gold that the gold decal stripes are kind of glittery might be the correct one?

Gold Poly I see it now but it doesn’t say wheel color, just accent color.

Simply going to the paint Store and quoting that number won't get you anything useful, but you can use it to find existing paints that are match to it and quote code. Same code for gold grilles, lights and stripes on SE and Formulas.

From my experience the ditzler and dupont codes mean nothing to a paint store at this point. The formulas are outdated and obsolete by todays standards. I had a hard time finding the 'right' colour for my grilles. Finally settled on some rustoleum. I have no idea what colour the guys used for my wheels but they look pretty good so I dont worry about it.

This is what I used on the grilles.

Same paint I used on the top (unmounted) steering wheel. The one on the car is NOS.

I thought this colour was pretty closed. You could spray a sample panel and take to a paint shop and have some mixed?

This is the colour on the wheels from the resto shop. Its a bit more yellow than the gold on the grille, but close enough not for me not to worry about it.

Getting as close as I can is really the goal. I understand I won’t find the “exact color” Yours look awesome, but then everything about your car is awesome! Thank you for your advice and knowledge. You have helped me on more then one occasion and I appreciate it. Did you clear over that paint?

Kerry BTW are your lugnuts the hex ones? Hard to see even if I blow the pic up. I need a new set for BURT.

Yes, the wheels have been clear coated. Much debate about that issue. I am glad they are done that way. I take a dry micro fibre and they clean up nicely in a minute. I had a company restore them for me. The cost was $120 per wheel and they did all 4 in less than 24 hrs.

You said lugnuts, but you are probably referring to the centre caps. They are round stainless. I think I got them from Ames (most likely as thats my go to). I recall maybe having a couple levels of quality, If so I got the best. I do know that the caps and the lug nuts cost almost as much as the wheels! They snap in hard, need a rubber mallet and cloth covered block to knock them in place. Once seated they seem like they are a bit loose, but they will be ok. I know some guys put silicone on them. Not sure how many miles I have driven but havent lost one yet.

this is a very good match to the gold honeycombs people have been using for many years, & its a very similar gold to the snowflakes gold. unless youre going for concours restoration correct, this or the other brand posted above is a very good match... 99.9% of people out there wont know or cant tell the difference on these parts from original, plus paints fade & change color after 40+ years.

Not concourse, but my cars are probably a step under that. I don’t go all nuts and bolts crazy, I don’t do many points judged shows anymore but do strive to get as close to factory as we can. I still do many shows just not concourse shows.

same here, i dont worry about 100% original or correct for my cars because they werent 100% correct when i bought them used but they are definitely show quality restorations. i do go nuts & bolts crazy in that i clean & paint/clear all fasteners & small items doing sub frame off resto's. that comes from building "show quality" model cars from such a young age.. & maybe a little OCD too!

I hear ya I’m a bit obsessive preparing for a show, but I love my hobby and just love taking it to the next level if you haven’t seen my cars here they are. My 69 is my avatar it was in Poncho Perfection Magazine last April edition.

yes ive seen your cars & read your threads when you got them, very nice. im kinda modest & dont post too many pics of my cars on here or social media, but heres some pics of mine... 81 daytona 500 pace car, 78 W72 WS6 4speed & my 72 firebird at the drag strip, but its not red anymore.

ive owned & parted out a lot of other 2nd gen birds over the years. my 1st car in highschool was a silver on red WS6 78 T/A with a 455/th400 from a 74 firebird... thats what started my obsession with these cars.

Wow! Very nice I’ll admit I post pics a lot maybe more then I should, but I am very proud of the years of work that went into them. I’ve had several other birds over the years the 69 my greatest achievement it took 13 years to complete. We are currently working on BURT the black car. These cars are my passion and I enjoy showing off mine and Mike’s work. Not trying to be a “show off” just proud to be in a mostly mans hobby and bringing these great cars back to life.

thanks. nothing wrong with showing off your cars... i just choose to not advertise mine too much, way to many horror strories out there of thieves stealing cars & parts. & with social media like facebook, anything you post is no longer your property, i posted an old pic a few years ago of my silver 78 with my X girlfriend next to it in a bikini & a few months later i saw it being shared all over facebook & in pontiac specific groups from people i dont know. i pulled the pic but it was too late... not that i care too much, just kinda shady to have private pics become public.

& lots of copy cats out there too, not that imitation isnt flattering, but when i did my 78 about 10 years ago & picked the silver/red decals that werent factory options, only gold was available in 78 on black cars & it looked tacky with my red interior, id never seen the combo anywhere before, im sure it was done before but not common... now i see lots of people doing it. also on my 72 i painted it a charcoal silver color with kind of a custom 70-72 T/A bird on the nose... a few years later i see a 73 done in the exact same color in my town, the guy saw mine & decided to do his the exact same color. now i have people telling me they saw me out driving around, but it wasnt me!

call me paranoid but i dont even park my cars out front of my house to display, they are always in the garage under a cover or with the door closed until i take them out to drive.
