That's awesome. We did the same thing in high school in the late '90s. The city finally shut it down after I graduated. Minus a few fashion differences and the extreme retro cars, some of these shots could have been taken when I was their age 25 years later.

Spotted a 66 and a 67 GTO in the pics, and a mid 60's fullsize Poncho.
Enjoyed seeing all those old pics Thanks for linking to it . |

I was cruzin the coast of Vietnam in the summer of 72. But remember those days before then. I had a nice little '60 Ford Stepside with chrome reverse wheels, dropped front axle, 4:11 rear, and a warmed over 312. Good times indeed. Occasionally mom would let me take the GTO out. Dad wouldn't though LOL.

I was there cruising in 1976, it was a truly magical time.
They closed it down right around 1980 or 1981, right after I painted my car and had it looking its best. Great pictures, thanks for the memories. ![]()

Living in coastal Virginia at the time, I was part of the smaller east coast version that was going on. We tended to congregate along waterfront areas. Asphalt in front of you with the beach and ocean right behind you. I have lots of fond memories of those days. Some of those are much like the first picture in that link, and I don't mean the white 67 Mustang.

Love the old square back, b-man. A friend of mine had a nice blue one in high school back in the mid-80's. Fun little car.

For us it was the Big Boy with car hop service just over a 4 lane bridge in Dayton OH. Every Friday and Saturday night, year around if it wasn't raining or snowing, there was cruising and street racing on the long 4 lane road from Needmore to Keowee Blvd. There were so many cars on that strip every weekend, Car Craft magazine featured the area in a 4-5 page spread in the mid 1970's. This sounds crazy today with how fast new cars are, but if you had a muscle car that would run honest 13.60-13.70 quarter mile times, you would do just fine in the street races. My friends kept a record book of our exploits. I still have it. My 70 1/2 Trans Am mostly stock was 204 wins, 15 losses and 2 ties on that strip of asphalt. Fun times indeed. Thanks for the great pictures.

Cruised it every now and then from 63 to 66, but I then ended up under the domain of Uncle Sam and the party was over. We lived pretty close to LA Airport and it blew a bunch of time getting to the Valley and back so it wasn't our regular cruise area. It was also more of a see-and-be-seen type cruising location with groups hanging out by themselves when they did stop.

Thats a drawback to living out in a rural area like I do, it took a half hour to get to any place like that, or more. Hamburger Heaven on Woodman Drive in Dayton was pretty good. But being in the boonies meant lots of wide open space - and lots of racing went on. Our area had a half dozen first gen Z/28s, a six pack super bee, a Hugger Orange 69 Yenko, a Rebel Machine, 71 442 W-30 convertible, a smattering of mustangs, and a handful of Pontiacs, plus your lesser transporation appliances. My dad was the go-to guy for tuning, and I saw a lot of neat stuff. He'd test drive the cars when he was done working on them, and I was pinned to a lot of seats as a kid. The only car that actually scared him was the Yenko, when it was "right", which was a rarity. "As long as hoods can be opened and screwdrivers carried by the owners, I will have work from these idiots".
There's still some cool stuff in the neighborhood (mostly mine), and the road in front of my house still sees a race occasionally. The cavalier vs ford escort race was a real dud last year, and seemed to go on forever.
