Man. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.
A couple observations: a) In the "lead photo" - there is no hood scoop. A couple pages down it shows a more "homemade" looking scoop. In neither case is it the more typical Ford Super Duty scoop. b) Also - the front grilles seem to have gone through a couple iterations. In the lead photo the header around the grille is a dark color (dark blue, maybe) as are the grilles themselves. In the photo that follows the grilles are back to the argent color - and look a little bent up. Here is some youtube footage of this little car going through the gate at Indy on a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpDyx...eature=related (at the 4:20 mark). Looks like a super duty scoop installed at that point. K

I noticed that too. Also saw that the left rear brake wheel cylinder is leaking. Can see the stryations on the tire & the gunk around the inside of the wheel.

The rear drums are said to be finned aluminum. Were those available on any other Tempests or are they a "custom" application? What are they off of? Same width and diameter as a regular rear drum?
Also, there is no mention per-se of a "positraction" rearend but there is mention of a "Barlock differential" and there is discussion of using a special GM lubricant in the differential available at Pontiac dealers as part number 513379. What is a Barlock differential? |

To my knowledge, there was never any "posi" diff available for any of the Tempest's. BUT,, doesnt mean nobody didnt have a spool machined up to eliminate the spider gear set. That is an aluminum brake drum in the picture.

The SD transaxle differential was a spool! That was the reason I sold mine.We could not figure a way to be able to street drive it.The R&P is so small that dragging a tire around corners was going to spell dome for it.WAY to valuable to risk it.Tom

Figured that was what the story was talking about Tom. Am allways hearing that they had a "posi" , but untill I see one with my own eye's, it doesnt exist. Figured it was a spool.

Tom S: how did they drive the SD at Daytona if it was a spool?
Matter of fact, how did they make the turn on the return road? I have the Corv12 story (strangest car, ever) and he drove his on the street quite a bit. He had an extra transaxle, didn't he? |

Not sure what they did for the Daytona car.The SD axles are way bigger than the stock 63 V8 axles, also the tail shat that goes into the diff is way larger and is also the oppsite as the street one.The street is male and the SD is femalel.Kieth can confirm.I should have taken pics when I had it apart on my bench. There is a shaft that is splined and goes straight thru the splined diff case and the tail shafts just go into the case.Everything is very HD except the R&P.Bill Blair told me they were good for about 10 runs. The trans shift was so hard they would push in the clutch when they shifted in the pits.Never talked to anyone that drove the ones with the fluid coupling.Tom

Here's the info I've found on the cars...
Ray Nichels - Highland, Indiana - '63 Coupe - this was the car that Paul Goldsmith drove in Daytona. It was set up (by Nichels) to be a roundy round car, not a drag car. This car has disapeared Mickey Thompson - Long Beach, CA - Two '63 Coupes - One car was driven by Bill Shrewsbery and Bob Spar (who owned B&M Automotive). It was eventually sold to Jess Tyree and destroyed in a trailering accident. Mickey's second car - Originally driven by Jess Tyree but sold to Arnie Beswick who converted it into the famous Tameless Tiger. Arlen Vanke - Anderson Pontiac, Akron, OH - This was a '63 Tempest Wagon, wherabouts unknown. Jim Wangers- Royal Pontiac, Royal Oak, MI - This was a '63 Tempest Wagon, driven by Wangers and Dick Jesse, wherabouts unknown. Harold Ramsey - Union Park Pontiac, Delaware - Driven by Ramsey, this car was a '63 Tempest Wagon. This car has been recovered. Arnie Beswick - Seltzer Pontiac - Chicago, IL - This was one of the '63 Tempest Wagons - "Mrs. Beswick's Grocerie Getter"? Stripped and dismantled in Indiana. Warren King - Van Winke Pontiac - Dallas, TX - A '63 Tempest Wagon, driven by J.L. Meador, later owned and raced by Don Gay. Al Hodges - Motor Co., Inc., Cocoa, FL - A '63 Tempest wagon, driven by John D. Tempest, wherabouts unknown. Stan Antlocer - Stan Long Pontiac, Detropit, MI - A '63 Tempest Coupe, recently found and sold to an enthusiast in NY for $223K. Bill Jarrett - Superior Pontiac, San Antonio, TX - A '63 Coupe, driven by Jarrett and Hugh Halff, Jr., wherabouts unknown. George Delorean - Southfield, MI - A '63 Tempest coupe. Owned and raced by George and Roger Schmitt. This car has been recovered and completly restored. Not long ago I discovered that an Internet friend of mine actually works with George Delorean (small world). I was going to have him ask if he had any old photos of his '63 but I figured that Pete McCarthy already did that long ago.

(Jim drove anything he wanted -mostly . Except for Dad's car - but that's another story). I think the operative concept here is they are describing it as the Royal car (to distinguish it from the other wagons). George Delorean goes to my church. He doesn't seem to want to talk about "the old days" so I get the impression we've learned all we are going to from him. That's a good list, though. I'd like for Tom S to take a look at it and make any addidtions/adjustments. K

there were 6 lemans coupes,6 tempest wagons and 2 tempest coupes.Bill Blair has one of the tempest coupes. The other tempest coupe was owned by M/T besides the 2 lemans coupes.Im told it is alive and well in the south east.It is a yorktown blue car.The guy I bought the SD trans axle from was offered the car for $3000.He owned 3 of the transaxles. One is in his jag powered corvair. He was a master machinest and did all the work to make his drivable. He made a converter for it.I actually went for a ride in the car.The other one becides the one I owned was a fluid couple unit and is owned by John Riconda the owner of the Stan Antlocer car.So as far as I know there are 4 of the 14 cars left. One Lemans, one wagon and two tempests.Tom
