Default "The mission of this Allied Force..."

"The mission of this Allied Force was fulfilled at 0241, local time, May 7th, 1945. Eisenhower."

Today is Victory in Europe day +79 years. Nearly all our WWII veterans are gone now, but if you're lucky enough to know one, thank them.

My wife and I were lucky enough to have stumbled onto the 50th VE Day celebration in Victoria, British Columbia. As we walked around Victoria Square there were hundreds of Canadian vets, male and female, all dressed in their WWII uniforms, celebrating the fall of the Third Reich.
It was a humbling experience.

I have known many WW2 vets in my life and thanked every one of them....long before it was a fad. The ones that I could get recollections from were awe inspiring. My neighbor had flown 33 missions in a B-17 over Schweinfurt ant Ploesti to bomb the ball bearing factories in the 8th air force. Casualty rate was over 70%. He showed me his blow up helmet from when he was hit by flak on his 25th mission or so. Healed up and was back at it. I asked why didn't he go home and he told me 'there was a war to win!" All those guys were like that. RIP Mike.

The "Greatest" generation. They saved the world. I've been to Normandy and the beaches and the cemeteries...quite a humbling experience. I had 3 Uncles who fought "over there".
