Default Procol Harum's Gary Brooker 76 and gone silent key.

Really enjoy the Procol Harum albums up to the early 70s.
Brooker's piano keywork in chime wth Matthew Fisher's Hammond keyboard stands the time test.
Robin Trower and the follow-on guitarist Dave Ball were outstanding.
BJ Wilson drumming made interesting time changes and emphasis, with Bass Dave Knights providing amazing continuity and Bridges.

"Drums and Bass make a band, the rest are just accessories" - some famous Muscisian

Yet Procol Harum keys and vocals were not accessories.

I'm lucky to have gone to a Robin Trower show here years ago. It was at a small venue, in St. Louis, called Mississippi Nights. Amazing guitarist!!!

RIP Saw them in the early 70's in concert. Hearing Whiter Shade of Pale live was a life experience.

Their music changed a lot of lives as it aged so gracefully.

Wow, RIP Gary. I grew up really enjoying these guys. I take some comfort in knowing there are others out there who still remember them. I guess it’s time to finally get a new cartridge for my turntable so I can listen to them again. I do have Bridge of Sighs on my IPod and listen to it cranked up in my garage.

Heard a Government Mule cover of A whiter shade of pale. Look it up if you are a fan. Brilliant.

RIP Gary Brooker. You did good and will not be forgotten.

A friend of mine and his band Club Phred played with Gary at the Grand in Wilmington, DE back in 2010. I wasn't there but I was told it was one of highlights for shows that year. I did see a short video tho of Gary and the band playing on stage.

But every so often I do get to see 2 lads from the 60s and 70s that are now friends of mine and play with Club Phred here in Delaware, Mark Farner and Felix Cavaliere.

If you have heard the phrase "Pulling Out all the stops " You can SEE those "Stops" on the hammond Organ in the Video in thread I linked above.

I believe Nick Mason, drummer for Pink Floyd made this statement.Hopefully he was joking. I'm a drummer, so I understand Mr. Mason's comment. The drummer is the engine of the band and if the bass player can play well together with the drummer, the band has a great foundation to build on.

I disagree with Nick because Gary Brooker is NOT an accessory. David Gilmour is NOT, absolutely NOT an accessory.

RIP Mr. Brooker. Thank You for sharing your talent with us.

@ blue81ta. Agree that quote was probably Nick Mason. Watched an interview of his and may have caught that nugget.

I play Bass, but not well. Seems my favored bands were BANDS like Zeppelin, Janes Gang, Mountain, Cream, Procol Harum with Trower and even David Ball. Punk Floyd, The Faces, Wings, Beatles, early Jethro Tull, The Who, Allman Brothers, Skinny Leonard and the Cars, Talking Heads, B52s, and CAKE. Sure there are more.

Quasi-BAND would be Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, SteveMiller Band ( was it all about Steve?!), JiMi, Procol Harum post Trower, and the Doors.

Zappa and John Mayal sort of more of a BAND than Quasi group.

Not a BAND is obvious; Elvis, Orbison, Paul Simon, Michael Jackson, Madona and all the boring digital-voice stuff the past 2-decades, stuff that followed.

In summary Nick Mason had a good point, true for alot of groups but not for Procol Harum, Allman, nor Leonard, The Cars and CAKE.
