I'm reconditioning the taillight assemblies on my 69 Firebird. Goof-off worked great getting the gasket material off the housing and aluminum facing, although it took many hours and stank the garage up.

I was worried about damaging the plastic lens but decided to give it a try. All seemed to be going great, then "crack", the lens split.

So, my question is: what's the best way to remove gasket material from the plastic? I'm guessing soap and water won't get it off and scraping with a knife or razor will damage the lens.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,

John

I did all that in 1985 and again in 1991[different 69bird].

Could have swore I had most of the sealing stuff and screwhead rust circles on the stainless piece - used 0000 steel wool on that.

Otherwise, I used Tide/water and scotch-Brite sponge on the red lenses. Probably followed up with a Stanley razor.

1/2":

Thanks for your reply and I'll follow up as you suggest on the other assembly.

Since I'm just getting started in all this, your advice on this topic and others has been very helpful -- just wanted to let you know that I definitely appreciate it.

John

Very carefully use a dull razor blade or putty knife . Follow up with enamel reducer ( Dupont #3812 ) to remove the sticky residue .

I used WD40 to remove the glue on my 68's tail lites. Being am amateur I find it safer to use than thinners as it doesn't seem to react with the plastic. I then use a stiff tooth brush to work it in and the glue just rolls off.
