I have a hood tack that I want to mount on my 69 400. I have a template and I'm comfortable about the location but I'm leary about cutting the clearance hole that the harness goes through. I've seen some nasty hack jobs and do not want mine to turn out that way. What is the best way to cut a nice clean hole without risking damage to my precious hood?

This months Pontiac Enthusiast (Volume 9 Number 6) has a step by step article on how to install a Hood Tach.

If you cant find a copy let me know and I will try to find mine, scan it and email it to you.

I purchased a 3 3/4" metal hole saw.
Measure twice, cut once!

Your welcome to borrow it if returned when completed.

Thanks for the info, hopefully the Nov/dec issue is still on the stand because I'm not a subscriber. I can usually find High Performance Pontiac but Pontiac Enthusiast is harder to come by.

Thanks for the offer, Larry. Is the saw you're talking about similar to a saw you would use to cut a hole for a door knob? I checked e-scam and there's a Starrett 3 5/8 saw for $7.99.

I purchased mine from Grainger. 3.75" is not easy to find in the hardware stores. Paid about $27.00 for it.

Use a jig saw with a good metal blade. It is no real problem as long as you mark it well.

TBC, That was my first thought... Drill a small hole, use a jig saw with a fine blade and follow a circular line and maybe clean up with a half round file or die grinder. I wanted to find out what methods other guys were using before I proceeded because I'm always looking to learn new techniques. I've been looking close at the underside of hoods with tach's to see what methods people have used and was very surprised at what I've seen. Even on really nice cars most of the tach installs are sub-quality. Tachs that don't sit flat on the hood is one problem, guys that try to seal the edge around the outside generally looks bad, and lastly rough looking clearance holes under the tach. I've seen irregular shaped oval type holes and even rectangular cutouts that had saw-cut over runs at the corners.

I have used a smaller hole drilled and marked out where to enlarge to using plenty of masking tape over and around the area. I enlarged the hole to the finished diameter using a Dremel tool with a carbide tip. Finish the edges by using the sanding drum with it. Comes out smooth and almost factory edge finish.
