Default Firewall marking?

Does anyone know if the Baltimore plant used the Grease pencil markings. I have a '68 GTO hardtop with a 3 sp manuel. The engine is being rebuilt so it a good time to get closer to concours. Thanks!

Default Firewall Markings

Here is the factory original firewall markings on my buddy's 02A Fremont built 69 RAIII Auto Judge. It should be noted that the factory markings were grease pencil markings UNDER the original black paint. Many of today's restorations put the white grease markings right over the freshly painted firewall. He believes the markings appear to be on top of the paint after years of weathering reveal the markings from under the paint. So he restored his Judge leaving the factory markings intact while freshening the paint on the firewall. The Judge was largely rust free anyway and very original to start with.

From the markings you can see the 74 (L74 RAIII engine), 24237, (GTO hardtop), C56- (unknown?), 4- (?), J (Judge), D80 (rear airfoil)

Pretty cool I think.

Not a Pontiac but my '69 Corvette has markings on the firewall- 3spdM while most vette's were 4spd's I think the only reason for the markings was to remind worker this one got a 3 spd. manual.

Its interesting how people restore their cars with the grease pencil over the paint. I have soda blasted quite a few cars and when you remove the paint from the fire wall you can see what the grease pencil read. You could not read before blasting. Its this fact that makes me believe the pencil was applied first over bare metal then the paint work done. This is of course JMHO.

Agreed. My buddy's Judge was the first restoration I had seen with the markings under the paint. I was questioning why he did it and after his explanation it makes perfect sense. I had to get the camera at a certain angle in the light just to see the markings at all. Your experience just further validates his claim.

My baltamore built convert had the paint and interior code on the firewall and I do believe that it was under a light dusting of black. That said my pontiac built limelight car had writing on the paint in the area under the fenders. I think I have a pic of that somewhere. I thought it was odd as the car had a repaint but that area was obviously untouched, I had not seen one with writing there before. Makes sense if you have to write on it as that area would be covered by the fenders.

Here are the firewall markings on my 1971 GT-37. Do they look to be under the paint?

My guess is yes, under the paint. The paint failed to last over the grease pencil markings, when it failed the pencil failed next and thats why you have rust in the form of writing.

I'll have to dig up pics of my dad's 68 olds cutlass. we bought it unrestored and unmolested with 31k on the ode back in the late 80's. When I painted the car I left the engine compartment alone and unrestored and I'd swear the grease pencil writing on the firewall was yellow and on top of the paint so maybe GM didn't always spray over it? personally, I've had a few 68-72 lemans/gto originals and have never seen grease pencil over paint on any of the firewalls.

Interesting that C56 (maybe C567), what is the color scheme of that car? Generally options with a C prefix relate to the fisher doghouse;

C01 is arctic wipers
C06 is power top
C24 is recessed wipers
C50 is rear defog
C51 is rear deflector on wagons
C57 is power flow

The C could also be Cameo White or a blue Cordova or convertible top and the 56 could be a green interior.

I believe some plants blacked out the markings and some plants it was on top. Baltimore plant seems to have blacked it out, but the Pontiac plant looks like it put it on top. This pic. is of a untouched 68 GTO Conv. parts car from the Pontiac plant E24 for E paint code and 24 for 224 trim. Scott

The G 223 pic. is a Pontiac plant car. The 639 23535 is a Fremont plant pic. And the R X markings are from the Kansas city plant. Scott

Can anyone decipher the codes on my 69 Judge? I didn't want to sand it to much for fear of making it illegible.
Also does anyone have a factory under hood light they want to sell to replace my missing one? Thanks.

I think it will help if you post some info about the car like; paint, top
and interior color, assembly plant, drivetrain combo, body style, options etc
