I'm trying to get the correct "keep your GM car all GM" for my 77TA. The owners manual says the car should use an A279C air cleaner. Therefore the code on the decal would be RD followed by 8995541. On John Witzke's site he says the car came with an A542C. Code on decal would be A542C followed by RE8995542. I think the A542C is listed for 2 barrell carbs. Anyone have a firm answer on which is correct ?

berrygoat, I have the factory original foam wrapped air cleaner filter and factory original air cleaner decal on my 1977 11,378 original mile W72 Trans Am. The filter is A542C and the decal is RE 8995542. In addition box number 53 - Air Cleaner on the factory build sheet list code RE. I assure you these are both correct and are correct for your car. I will not misguide you on what is factory correct for your car. I have no idea why the owners manual and for that matter the 1977 Service manual list A279C as the correct air filter as this is incorrect.

I have a completely original 1978 T/A 6.6, vin code Z. It has the original a542c air cleaner, even though the housing says use A279C. The owners manual says to use A279C for the 400c.i., unless the motor is the T/A 6.6. Then it says to use the A542C. This is noted by a * at the bottom of the page. I hope this helps with your 77.
