Default '68 Firebird 400 Convertible

1968 Firebird 400 Convertible. Original PHS Documented matching number 69K mile car in the beautiful factory colors of Alpine Blue exterior and white deluxe interior.

This car received an extensive cosmetic restoration and mechanical refurbishment 20 years ago, and has been maintained in collections with less than 10k miles added since. It drives like new.

Comes with original build sheet (although it’s a bit hard to read) and owners manual.

Following are the factory installed options per the PHS:
• Firebird 400 Package
• TH400 Automatic Transmission
• Safe-T-Track Axle
• Radio, Push Button AM / FM
• Manual Antenna, Rear
• Rear Seat Speaker
• Door Edge Guards
• Mirror, Visor Vanity
• Mirror, Outside Remote Control
• Seatbelts, Custom
• Tachometer, Hood Mounted
• Cruise Control
• Rally II Wheels
• Custom Sports Steering Wheel
• Console
• Clock, Electric
• Dual Exhaust
• Power Steering
• Power Brakes
• Soft Ray Glass, All Windows
• Power Top
• Custom Air Conditioning
• Floor Mats
• Spare Tire, Conventional
• F70 x 14 White, Wide Oval Tires
• Air Cleaner, Dual Stage HD

One repaint in the original Alpine Blue was performed during the refurbishment of the car in 1990. It is lacquer paint in base coat /clear coat, and although it looks great from a few feet away, up close it shows some slight flaws typical of older lacquer paint jobs. There are also a few chips and scratches here and there. The white HO stripes are not correct for this car (as built, it had no stripes), but they look sharp with the white top and interior. It’s not going to win a national level concours, but it turns a lot of heads.

There’s no evident rust anywhere on the car, including the underbody, trunk, etc. See pictures of the underside included with the photo link.

The convertible top was replaced with a correct one at the same time the car was repainted, and it’s in remarkably good condition – no rips or tears anywhere and the power top works great. The white top color is not correct for the car, as per the PHS and trim tag it originally had a teal top.

The convertible unique “cocktail shakers” are still with the car. It even still has all four of its original T3 headlights, and they work, as do all other lamps, horn, etc.

The interior is correct and original appearing. The dash and carpet are in great shape, and the deluxe white seats have no tears. The factory AM/FM radio still works, although it definitely sounds a bit flat. The air conditioning system is complete and working – it blows reasonably cool in the summer, but not “ice cold”. If you’re counting on the A/C in very hot weather, it probably could stand to be serviced. All instruments, including the hood tach and clock (converted to quartz) work fine.

The matching numbers engine, cylinder heads, and intake/exhaust manifolds are still in the car, and the engine runs great. The carb is a rebuilt 7028276 (72 service date coded 1968 Ram Air II auto carb). It accelerates hard with no hesitation, and easily burns the tires from a stop. The transmission shifts perfectly – smooth shifts under part throttle and no trouble breaking the tires loose and sliding the tail sideways on a wide open throttle 1-2 shift. It has an aluminized exhaust system with a transverse muffler and no resonators. It has a nice muscular sounding exhaust note, but doesn’t drone on the highway or sound too loud. The axle in the car is original, but the factory gears have been replaced with 3.55s for a bit more off the line acceleration.

The following items were replaced or rebuilt during the car’s refurbishment less than 10k miles ago (and the receipts will go with the car):
• Transmission rebuilt, with new converter
• Carburetor rebuilt and new fuel filter
• Power steering pump rebuilt
• Power steering hoses
• Radiator, radiator cap, radiator/heater hoses and clamps
• Exhaust system
• Starter
• Hood tach rebuilt and recalibrated
• Clock rebuilt (clock converted to quartz)
• U-Joints
• Rear axle bearings
• Shock absorbers
• Front sway bar bushings (rubber)
• Inner and outer tie rod ends, pitman arm, ball joints
• Control arm bushings (rubber)
• Rear leaf spring bushings (rubber)
• Engine and transmission mounts (rubber)
• Alternator
• Ignition coil, plugs, rotor, cap, points, condenser, distributor curve kit
• Speedometer cable
• Throttle cable
• Wheel bearings
• All weatherstripping (doors, windows, trunk)
• Tires (still in perfect shape)

This Firebird drives wonderfully – I wouldn’t hesitate to take it across the country. Recognizing that it’s a 40+ year old car, though, it’s sold as is, of course.

I suspect that if it had a clutch pedal, the price would be higher.
