70 TA quadrajet ID
My car has a WS code replacement block. It also has a 68 or 69 intake. I just looked at the carb and it is stamped 7040273. I know there are fake re-stamped carbs out there. How do I ID this? What else to look for? Thanks.

The NUMBER is correct, that pic won't tell you if it is a REAL 7040273 carb.
As you mentioned there are a TON of fakes out there. Some are pretty good, others are just restamped junk.
Another quick check would be to verify that there are the two extra air holes drilled into the primary butterflies. But, again, those can be added. You would really need the casting numbers on ALL the parts (top, fuel bowl, throttle plate) to attempt to verify if it is correct and originally a 7040273 carb. That will require a complete disassembly and plenty of high quality pics. Even if it is restamped, Cliff Ruggles could certainly help you with recalibration to make it run like an original Ram Air carb. Or even better. Good luck! |

OTOH if an original RA 4 speed I doubt that it has the original jets and rods.

That's the thing. It is a documented RA III 4 spd. It's not like I found it in a box at a swap meet or on ebay or on some other car. One day I'll have to dig into it and see what I can find. It's functioning well, so for now I'm gonna leave it alone and tell myself it's real.

Point is that prolly the only difference between a 7040264 and your is rods and jets and springs. I'd have to find my Rochester parts book to know..is here somewhere...

To start with I think the top is pretty EZ to ID as a RA top.Pic of the Acc pump shaft going into the carb?Tom

All three sections are fairly easy to ID;
The airhorn is only used on 7040270/7040273. The fuel bowl us also fairly distinct in it's number and traits. The fuel bowl casting number can be read on the rear, drivers side - take note if the central vaccum break is covered.

Clearly a "remanufactured" "frankencarb".
To start with it has a secondary throttle shaft with dual springs. FWIW |
