Default window cranks......somebody please do something!

Somebody needs to tool up to make decent GM window cranks. GM only sells
the ones with black knobs and 68-72 A-bodys require clear knobs. The window cranks
everyone sells have the female toothed part to large and the knob wallows around on the
window regulator shaft and strips out after you roll your window down five or six times. If
I had known GM would quit making these and nobody else would make decent ones, I would have
bought up every one GM had years ago.

I agree the repops are pretty poor. It should not be a big deal to make decent cranks with colored knobs.

I too need to find 4 clear knob handles, I was wondering if there's any way to buy the re-pops and change just the handle part ,,, I think they are held on with a rivet type of swedged metal. I haven't had a chance to look into that yet but it was just an idea. I was also wondering if there is any way to get the yellowing out of old ones, they are still not that hard to find at swap meets but they are always somewhere between yellow and brown.

I think there are a couple differentaftermarket versions of these. We'll post our findings as soon as we can.

Go around to the Help section in parts stores. I've seen the cranks with clear knobs you're looking for.. and they're good looking GM replacements.

I'd buy a set if they are correct.

I had the same problem during the restoration in 2004. I believe I got the repro cranks from Ames. They looked great, but never gripped the regulator shaft properly. I ended up getting the HELP! version and never had any problems after that. The knob looked slightly different, but I can live with that.

As the last guy posted the help line handles work great & they are a lot cheaper to buy. Any of the national parts stores sell both the black & clear ones for about $ 6.00 for 2 of them.

Guys, we bought the HELP style window crank and I tested it on a 70 GTO regulator I have in my stash of parts at my house. It seems to clip on fine and grab the teeth of the regulator OK. To me, it seems like there is as much play in the HELP one as the one PY sells. It moved in and out as much as the PY one too. I do not have manual windows in either of my cars to really test the operation, but in my opinion the HELP ones are made cheaper than the ones PY sells. Just by holding one in each hand, you can really tell the difference in weight. Also the shape of the chrome shaft is different than an original one. The HELP one we got already had something inside/behind the clear knob. It looks like either a pocket in the plastic or it was mold starting. GP Mike

Are you useing the plastic washer & spring behind the handle or are you just putting it on without these items. Because without these items it will feel very loose because they fill some of the void plus it puts some outward pressure on the handle.
