I talked to him about that one. He said that was for a 69 Judge, I think the casting ends in 351. I told him I wanted one with that same impeller but a normal 11 bolt pump; I wasn't concerned on the casting number or date code. He is shipping me a rebuilt 488296 casting with a 1976 date code. We will see in a couple of days if the impeller is the same. I am really hoping.

That pump looks great. But anything over 50$ for a water pump is steep!!!

What we need most of all is a part number for the original cast impeller itself. For both 8 and 11 bolt impellers. I've seen some originals that have it, but that was a long long time ago.

BTW... I was gone all day today and didn't get to call Cardone. I'm going to hold off and wait for the part numbers as they will really help things roll along.... I hope.

Keep your fingers crossed that the one I have coming in still has the original impeller. I will let you know one way or the other.

Dale, what's the ETA for your pump? If yours looks good I plan to give him a call for a price and to see if he can set me up with a 9796351 11-bolt with a short snout.

What's interesting is that waterpumpman is in Michigan not far from me so if things work out I may be going there.

Mark,
It is supposed to be here tomorrow. As a matter of fact he currently does have a 351 pump ready to go. There is a picture of it on post #38 of this thread. Here is the ebay listing.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PONTIAC-GTO-...item48424c6c48
His name is Michael Scott and his number is 248-225-0625. Most of the time you have to leave a message but he is very good about returning calls. He is also very good about shipping. I paid him with PayPal on one afternoon and it shipped the next morning. I will let you know what the impeller looks like when it comes in. If it looks correct I will take pictures and post the measurements along with any casting numbers on the impeller. He said the impeller looks like the 351 he has for sale on ebay, I sure hope so.

Yeah, that 351 is the one I posted so I saw it. I definitely don't need a proper date coded casting so hopfully he can rebuild one for me for less than $239.

Mark,
Sorry, I should have looked closer and realized you were the one that posted that.

I just had an interesting chat with Mike at Waterpumpman when he returned my call. He was really surprised that I am interested in a cast impeller and said that he generally throws them away when they come in and uses stamped for his rebuilds because they are cheap and he believes they work good. I told him that it is my understanding that many Pontiac guys have proven that a cast impeller with tall veins and a properly fitted divider plate results in lower engine temp's. He told me that he can give me whatever I want so if I want a cast impeller with tall veins it's no problem... but, he did say that the tall veins are prone to bits breaking off so he wanted to warn me about that.

Unfortunately I have an early 69 short pump so he doesn't have a core but as long as I don't need an original I can give him any short casting and he'll rebuild it with a cast impeller.

Wow, that surprises me that he said that. He never gave me any indication that he did not believe in the cast impellers. He also acted like it was no big deal and that he had a lot of them. Oh well, you never know what line people give you to make a sell.

Just put of curiosity, did he give you a price? It is usually cheaper to stick with the short pump than swap everything over...

Mike said that if I send him a core he'll rebuild it with a cast impeller for $99 so I don't plan to switch to a long pump.

I will add some info to this thread. I have found a source for new water pumps with cast impellar. Since it is new I would imagine they would all have the same impellar in each box? Anyways Pep boys stocks it and its a Bosch unit, Part number 98023. It has the full length vanes that go to the edge of the impellar, not the machined outer edge version like in the first post where you can see like 3/4 inch of the vane edge machined away. This pump still needs the divider plate clearanced down in the middle or the impellar pulled out slightly however like in the past but al least you know what you are going to get in the box. At least I would think so since it claims to be a 100 percent new pump, and I got mine for 33 bucks. Oh yeah and lifetime warranty thru Pepboys!

I may have spoke too soon. I searched for this part number online and rockauto shows a pic of it with a stamped impellar so still check in the box I guess. Maybe they are using a different file photo? I hope.

Sure thing!
The vanes appear to measure a little over 1/2" high in the middle and they taper up and down from there:

33$ with some nice vanes!!!

Can't go wrong there!!! I wish the Evans pump was NOT so darn pricey. OR that the 33$ pump had the vanes the Evans ones have. That pump would sell like hotcakes!!!

[QUOTE=428GTO70;4668504] Part number 98023./QUOTE]

I had found that part number in searches, not from Pep Boys though, and all of the pictures showed stamped impellers. Maybe the trick is to ensure it is a Bosch unit. What is the actual diameter of the impeller?
Dale
