Default TA 72 back to life

Fellow Pontiac enthusiasts,

After a summer repairing rust on my Chevy diesel truck I am eager to start working on something not so rusty. I dusted off the old TA in the garage and is planning to start the restoration this winter. The TA is a December built White with Blue int California car that has been off the road since it was imported to Sweden in the 80:s with 49 345 on the odometer, transmission is an auto and the car is equipped with Air. The car probably have its original paint and no rust except some surface rust above the rear window. The driver side rear fender was cut out together with the tail panel and door changed before I got the car probably due to some old damage. I have a NOS tail panel and a rust free fender cut out from a 72 Firebird that I prefer to use in front of repro.

I have owned the car a couple of years but it was totally apart when I got it so I will probably miss a few things. However most of it seems to be there except the front fenders, gas-tank and two of the Rally II.I have also identified a couple of incorrect parts. Year correct but non TA TH400 (PG) transmission, 7042272 carb, probably wrong main brake cylinder and steel front valance. The block is matching and complete with heads, intake, exhaust, non-utilized distributor, shaker and AC parts. The dash need to be repaired, new floor mats and probably some part of the buckets need to be replaced.

What do you think, is the old machine worth it? I am planning to build the car to use it on sunny days and want it as close to original as possible.

Btw, thanks PY, keepat, njsteve among others for great inspiration.

Looking for
70-72 Front Fenders (73-> interesting if really nice)
7042270 carb
1972 PQ TH400 transmission

good luck with the project.
my advise is to get it together as a driver and then try to get the last little parts. saddly the parts you are missing are some of the most expensive. carb-2,000+, fenders - i paid 2,000 for a set a couple years ago, (you just don't see them very often) trans-not sure but not cheap, wheels-250+ each.
carb, trans and wheels you could get by with others cheaper for now and look for deals as you go.

Thanks for the advices. Tommie69 you are probably right about the miles, 104k sounds correct. Those miles odos always confuse me, sorry for that . I am planning to build the 7042272 and PG according to 7042270/PQ specs until I find the correct units. I have actually found a 70 driver side TA fender locally that need some work and have parted out a 71 esprit that will donor the parts needed to convert the passenger side later TA fender until I find a perfect pair. I have been quite lucky finding parts to my and my friends judges through the years so I am hopeful to find the missing parts to this car too. Will keep you updated during the process.

we complain about how hard it is to find things here, it must really be hard over there. i had 7 71's at one time a few years ago. i bet there are not too many more than that over there.

I had a great time tonight going through the boxes and put the parts in new plastic crates. Small packages of parts seriously restored by the previous owner. There is a lot of stuff that still need work but will probably save me a lot of hours . The downside is that it is hard to know the original colors and plating but with this excellent forum i am quite sure that I will find the answers. I can promise you that it requires a lot of plastic boxes to accommodate a 72 Trans AM in parts .

Someone who can help me identify the item in the third picture? I am quite sure i have seen it before but cant find a place for it.

The little formed spacer is normally found behind the stamped steel front A/C bracket & the head on '71 & 72 V8 Birds. Not sure when it was phased out.

Many times it is lost, & has to be replaced. Been my experience that on '71-72, A-bodys, Grand Prix's & big cars, a round steel spacer is used.

Must be. Vikings won a game (for a total of 2 so far). I get too distracted sometimes.

You've got a lot of rare one year only (TVS switch) or two year only (rear AC compressor bracket) parts there, and some hard to find parts such as the exhaust shroud so a great head start on this one. Good luck and have fun.

We'll be looking forward to your progress, Thomas. Nice T/A!

You are most fortunate to have njsteve's thread for reference - great stuff!

How do you think I feel with the Lions being 6-2 with 4 road wins? This whole season must be a dream.

Thanks for the compliments and thanks 'ol Pinion head for the clarification about the spacer. I am glad to have this great forum as reference and really appreciate your help. Internet does for sure help us on this side of the pool restore your great cars Hopefully my thread will give something back to the community.

Was doing some reading in the service manual on the metro today and got curious about the radio system. I got the unit on the picture with the car together with rear speakers. If it is correct to the car i assume it is the "Monaural radio with stereo tape player". I have never seen a unit like this IRL. The manual refers to a box called "Stereo tape unit" not to be mixed up with "Stereo tape unit cassette" which I assume is the 8 track player and a external balance. Do anyone have a picture how this "Stereo tape unit" is mounted in the car including the balance? Did not find anything when i searched the forum.

what does back of radio look like? Was more common to have the radio stereo, but this was installed too.
