Found the subframe far back in my storage today. The subframe is dirty but solid and will clean up well. I am planning to paint it semigloss black next week, or should I consider powder coating?

My Engine builder will start with the power-plant next Saturday, most of the parts seems to be there but still have a couple of boxes to go through. Please comment if you see something that looks wrong for this 72 TA Aut non Utilized Air car. Found a stainless plate (picture 3) that I couldn't find a place for directly, will dig in to the manuals

Thomas,

that part in your third picture looks like the heat shield for the starter solenoid.

You're right about the heat shield James, the first time I've seen one IRL. Thank you.
The old 455 is now delivered to one of our best engine builders, will be interesting to see what the effect numbers will be after his treatments. The recipe is original with a little more camshaft.

Smile Itīs Alive

Finally the engine is back together after more than 20 years in boxes.
Specs: 4.21 bore, 9.6:1 comp, Crane hydraulic roller 289621, Eagle rods, Ross pistons, everything else stock 455HO -72 (heads, intake, carb, distr, exhaust etc.)
The objective with the build was to get a stock feeling in an AC, 3.08, aut car with some extra bite. The engine shows great power, starts and idle like a dream, 520.3 LB-Ft & 418.1 Hp in an restrictive low side dyno. I am really happy with the results

Thanks Lennart, Kenth and Konolaracing for great help with the build.

Next paint and detailing (yes, the bolts that are not correct will be changed to the original ones).

Regards Thomas

Very Nice Thomas. Thanks for posting. Lots of original pieces made it through intact all these years. Congrats on your neat car!! Keep posting pics of the build as it looks top quality so far.

The manual refers to a box called "Stereo tape unit" not to be mixed up with "Stereo tape unit cassette" which I assume is the 8 track player and a external balance. Do anyone have a picture how this "Stereo tape unit" is mounted in the car including the balance? Did not find anything when i searched the forum.
Here's a link to the '72 brochure that shows the various radio types:

I am restoring two '72's, and on the auto TA, the subframe was so clean I was able to powdercoat it in semigloss. I like it, and it's durable as heck. I powdercoated the upper and lower A Arms in gloss black. The 4spd subframe needed some glazing over some pitted areas so powdercoating was out of the question. I'll post some pictures tonight.

Congratulations on bringing fire back into that YE block after all these years.

Hmmmm, 520ftlbs/418HP..... Those are some pretty nice numbers Brannon. Did you have the stock exhaust manifolds on the engine for this dyno run?

I wonder if my engine builder will be able to touch those numbers????

for the compliments and 165th for the links and input about the subframe. The great pictures of the restored subframe in your Flickr is great inspiration. Keep them coming . Right now i am up to my ears with work and waiting for some small parts before it is time to paint the engine. The body will be mounted in the rotoserie in a couple of weeks.

The exhaust manifolds is stock and the downpipes 2 1/4".

I am still looking for pass (right) front fender 70-72. I really nice couple of later model could also be interested as donor.

Was your 72 California Car built/born at the Norwood Plant ?
You have it looking really nice with the quarter panel and tail panel replaced.

That's purdy. Slow, but done to a high level is far better than quick and slapped together.

Hi BVZ and thanks,
Yes, Norwood car, we tried to color match and simulate the factory oxide, looks a bit red on the photo but i think we are fairly close, will be better with the overspray in place. The body was like a dream to work with, 0 rust and only GM panels front to back.
