Default Diff housing and axle tube paint color.

Want to detail the the diff housing and axle tubes in our 70 TA. From doing a search here, seems like black was the factory color on most Pontiac models. In some cases the axle assemble were fully painted to just partially painted !!
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for everyone's comments and pics. Looks like cast iron gray for the middle section and silver/steel for the tubes, cover and backing plates.

I'm a little surprised (...a little...) that they got nothing.

Trucks of the same area went through a small spray booth before body drop where chassis black was drizzled in the general direction of the top of the diff, axle tubes and brake drums. To describe it as "painting" would be a bit generous. They certainly look better just clean.

Agree Keith.... if you guys grab a copy of Echoes of Norwood you find a few pics of cars on line being built up . There is a notation that the axle tubes are black the brake backing plates were unpainted as well as the center section.

A buddy of mine that has done several Norwood second gen Z28's told me he has seen paint on all the cars he has torn down for rebuild .in this area . This guy is very detailed on tear down posses.washing and documenting all areas of his project

as Keith said there may have been a black out area where black was added to non painted parts.?

this pic has been around awhile you may have seen . although its a 1st gen car it shows over spray on exhaust as if black was sprayed after some assembly

It’s called black out and yes the cars were haphazardly “blacked out” after assembly. I believe a search will pull up info

I totally agree with the "black out" comments. I've had several very low mile unrestored 'A', 'X' and 'F' cars back in "the day" and they all had a very randomly sprayed black treatment on the rear axle and nearby areas. Back then a good friend of mine was a manager at a Chevrolet dealership. I'd asked him why this was done and why so sloppy. He believed it was done to improve the undercar appearance to new car shoppers who often would bend down to take a peek underneath. If left bare, they knew flash rust from humidity would already cause bare metal things to look old, or worse than they really were. It didn't have to be especially pretty, just good enough for a quick glance or two. I've always believed that to be a reasonable reason why this was done.

So if you had to paint the axle tubes and backing plates. What would you do?
Car is a driver not a concourse car. Everything is black now. Just want to detail the rear. Thinking center piece cast gray, cover black...

Paint it dark steel grey and cast iron and call it done. I had mine powdercoated, the steel colour came out like a bright silver fresh steel and was disappointing, but it isn't seen.

I would do it just like in notime's pics, or just paint everything underneath all black. Whatever you want (it's your car).

But I would not in any fashion duplicate the haphazard application of chassis black.
