Default SD scoop or not

Built a pretty stout 455 for my 64 Catalina. I’m running a northwind intake that leaves me about an inch short on hood clearance with a 3” drop base air cleaner. Looked at switching to a Torker but I think it still will not have enough clearance. Thinking a SD scoop would work but dont know that I have seen one on a 64. Would it be period correct to put a scoop on a 64? Any pics of a 64 with one installed? Pic of my car before the new motor install.

JMHO. No, don’t put the scoop on. Looks very stealth & bada$$ without it. I wouldn’t even change intakes, you’re not gonna gain anything on a street car. Just have fun with it!
But, as always, it’s your car, do what makes YOU happy. . . . ,

A fiend on this board has one on a 64 2plus2 and looks pretty good! They did not come on the scene until 1963 so 64 would not have been out of place.A HSD will give you more hood room.Tom

Unless you have the power under the hood to warrant a Ford truck scoop, I'd say no.

Brings back memories of guys that would take Grandma's 307 Chevelle and put a hood scoop on it.

It just screams "wrong'

Should make 550-600 hp. I have ported E heads so I need a decent flowing intake that can be port matched. I’m also running Sniper efi that uses a square bore throttle body so a ported stock or other spread bore intake is out.

I prefer no scoop but how much horsepower will you lose? If I did use scoop I would paint it beautiful same color. Do you have more info in your build? Did you tub the rear? Great looking car!

I like the flat hood look also just not sure if I can get everything under the hood.

No tubs. 15x8 8 lugs with a 275/60 drag radial on the back. 4.10 posi 9.3. The engine is stock crank, forged pistons/rods, Butler ported E heads, HR cam, 10.5:1. TKO 600, hydraulic clutch, custom aluminum ds

Great color and beautiful car. If you can make it all fit under the flat hood, that would be my choice. From the pics, it looks like you have plenty of room. I am in a similar boat with my 62 Catalina. Flat hood and good paint like your car. But I will be putting one of Tom's bathtub intakes on when they are available. Hope my deal fits as well.

Use a hat and a remote air filter similar to a turbo car or a car with a Procharger. First of all the scoop would look out of place and second don't cut up the hood.

It looks like there would be plenty of room on these big ol cars but not as much as you would think. The front of the air cleaner is the problem. Backside will clear. A hat with custom intake tube that goes toward the firewall and then back towards the core support might work.

Mike,REAL air cleaners will be a issue. The factory ones maybe but they dont fit 5in carb tops and a adapter will make it worse.IF,a big if this project actually happens I think about a 1/2 inch can be removed from the top.Tom

I think you are going to find out that you have more room there than you think. Remember, no hood is flat. Every hood has a significant crown. That crown will give you more room than you'd expect.

Also, with that style air cleaner, you can play with the size and go with a thinner filter element.

Thanks for the info Tom. Don't mean to hijack. I have a pair of air cleaners that came with the car. Look like correct SD style. Have to measure the openings. I don't want to cut my hood either.

Damn that Cat looks Good
I can't really recall ever seeing anything 1964 in that color.
And looks like you even have Ventura tri-tone interior

More Pictures !! Interior !

Some good ideas on breathers / tubes.
The 65-66 or 67 GTO Chrome Pancake Breathers are very low profile and would probably work - but also might choke the air supply on that thumper.

If had to do a SD scoop - would face it rearward where it wasn't such a high contrast/thumb . Blended/Molded in smooth around perimeter.

I would scoop it - clearance and cold air.

Keep the drop, if later you or somebody else wishes for a flat hood they can do it - just metalworking.
