While I wait on parts a measured the depth of the old pump and pickup and without a gasket I appeared to be anywhere between 1/16th and 1/8th from the pan. Hoping that at least contributed to my issues and a correction along with a new pump will make a difference

Don’t be too hard on yourself, these things happen. I was at a Chevy dealership parts department in Georgia once and suddenly heard a gigantic BOOM! A mechanic in the garage had an absolutely brand spanking new Suburban up on the lift and gravity decided to win that war. Nobody hurt but the fancy new SUV was looking like a demolition derby finalist!

So I may have to replace my oil filter housing due to the drop. A few threads for buggered up. If I can get them usable, I’d there any reason to stay away from a used? I was surprised to find how expensive they are new.

Disregard, I was actually able to file down the last two threads which were damaged and the filter screws on smoothly. Also, sorry for such bad spelling on the last post. Auto-correct was not my friend on that one.

Have you ever used hylomar M ? It’s great for curing leaky gaskets of just about any kind. It won’t fix your low oil pressure issue but it sure is nice when Doing a rebuild to keep from having leaks down the road . We use it in airplanes a lot. Really good stuff.

Hylomar is GREAT,way more EZ to clean up than most other sealants.Been using it for years.Used to be able to buy it at auto parts stores.Hard to find these days.Tom

In reality the pickup needs to be darn close to the same height off the bottom of the pan as the diameter of the pickup tube the pump uses.
These days since you can’t get any other Pontiac pump that does not have the good 3/4” size pickup tube, all I can say is a minimum of 1/2” off the bottom of the pan is what I would be wanting.

Going back to the filter housing real quick, this engine is a 69 with the 90° filter housing which also has the provision for the sensor perpendicular to the block which does not allow installation in my f body. Someone before me drilled and tapped the side of it so the sensor could be located the same as the 120°/tilted filter housing. That wouldn’t cause an inaccurate pressure reading would it?

That fitting is drilled into the in let side of the filter it looks like , the unused original taped hole is on the outlet side of the filter which is where you would want it.

I dont have a picture of mine handy at the moment but I borrowed one from eBay. The added fitting leads to the void I have circled which i think would still be oil entering the filter from the pump which I THINK? is the same as the factory fitting?
I guess I’ll have to look at mine closer.

A bit off topic but does polishing crank journals remove a measurable amount of material? I know that may be somewhat subjective. If the answer is yes though, how much are we taking?

Yamabond or Hondabond, from your respective local Yamaha or Honda motorcycle dealer, are good alternatives to Hylomar. You can probably get them online from Amazon or other sources as well.
