Red or Black center caps for 70 T/A?
I've seen them both used and actually have a set of each, but how exactly did they option these out?
What would be considered correct for 70? |

All my GM/PMD parts books show either one for 1970. So this is obviously a transition year probably based on if the car is an early build. Black is for 1967 to 1970 and red is for 1970 to 1972.

You’re correct and the Trans Am being a later car would be red .I don’t ever remember seeing a 70 TA with black center caps but I didn’t see them all

I forgot that that gen F body was a late version. You've owned the cars, I only own the parts and the books.

Jan and Feb show cars ( Detroit) and the Daytona race parade cars had black. They are only ones I have ever seen black from factory. Goodyear tires were used more than most think as well.

I seem to recall from a long time ago someone here on the board posted the change from black to red took place in December, 1969. There was a specific date in the month mentioned as well. I just can't remember the actual date or the posters name.
I have a 1970 GTO made in the third week of December, 1969 and it has red center caps. The 1970 T/A in the stable was made in May, 1970. It has red center caps. |

the 1970 model year was when the caps changed;
At the start of the model year, black caps were used, and the general consensus is that by January 1970 red caps were being used exclusively. To answer the original question; For 1970 Firebirds red caps are correct, and black caps are incorrect. Keep in mind that at the time called "1970+", because 69 model year cars were being built through to November(?) 1969)
