Cold rain. I'm 30 miles from the freezing line and it's headed this way. Temp was 33 this morning when I left home and it was raining. The temp went to 40 and is slowly falling back, headed to 15 in the morning.
Messy...

Get back to us after your next hurricane.

Really, there are pluses and minuses to the weather no matter where one lives. This cold snap will be done in a few days and things will return to normal.

A breezy 65 in Yuma right now. I see we're supposed to get 6-10 inches of snow back home today. Darn. You know I used to make fun of snow birds, but now that I am one, I totally get not missing winter weather!

We don't usually get much ice & snow here in North Central Louisiana. But, this is our 2nd snow this Winter.

Got freezing rain & sleet all last night, which turned to snow early this morning. Don't know the official numbers. But, there is probably at least a 4" accumulation.

And, it'll be here for a while. Temps not supposed to get out of the 20's today. predicted low temps for Tues morning are in the single digits, in our area. I've seen every number from 6° thru 9°. Will no doubt break all modern day records, for us.

I suppose many of those who live in areas that have cold Winters think that any temp above zero is not really cold at all. But, as others have mentioned, we're just not set up to cope with single digit temps, snow, & ice, here in North Louisiana.

By the way, the thermometer in the 2nd pic usually registers above 100°, several times during our Summers here. Although it was reading just above 20° when the pic was taken, it doesn't really tell you how cold it is here. It's located on our back porch, where none of the significant North wind can hit it. So, the "feel like" temp is much colder. Tues morning, that "feel like" temp will probably be several degrees below zero. Now that's cold, for Louisiana.

Can't leave this without saying: Thank God we still have power ! It went off, for a few seconds, several times last night. But, it came right back on & has stayed on, so far. I have our small generator ready, along with nearly 20 gals of gas. But, hopefully, we won't have to use it. We're keeping the inside temp warmer than normal, so that if we do lose power, it will take a bit longer for the inside temp to get really low. House has good insulation, so it would probably take a couple of days, or maybe longer, for the inside temp to fall below freezing. We can still remember when our single wide mobile home would fall to the same inside temp as the outside temp, in just a few hours. At least once, the water in the commode froze solid. We moved in with Mom, for a day or 2. We didn't really keep records of all the cold weather events. But, when I look up record cold temps, sometimes I run across dates that are probably events we remember. I think one of those happened in Dec of 1983.

One winter, I had a 455 block freeze & bust out the side. It was in my '69 GTO bracket car. It was parked right beside the steps of our single wide. I remember going out to try to get some anti freeze into it. But, the air temp was in the teens & the North wind was probably 20-25mph & gusting higher. I finally just got so cold, I couldn't handle it. Had to just let it bust. But, back then I had several spare 455 cores. So, I just put the guts of the busted block over into a spare block. Back in business.

The worst I remember was in 1961, IIRC. It snowed about a foot & didn't get above freezing for several days. I was still milking our cows, twice a day, at that time. Everything was froze up, & nothing would work right. Thankfully, Dad decided to sell the milk cows, after that incident. That made me a happy young feller. It's all just part of my history, a part I'll never forget.

San Marcos Tx. Woke up with no power, 7 degrees and 4 inches of snow on the ground. Power came back around noon. High today is supposed to be 25. Last week I was driving the convertible! Haven't seen anything like this since the 80"s.

No measurable snowfall this winter all the way through January. Then February hit. We will be way above average this month. Expecting 8" or so tonight. Another 4-6" Thursday. Cold and windy. Southern OH.

We are about normal here in the Metro Detroit area. "Big" snow coming in a few hours according to the weather forecasters. I love watching the weather channel trying to say all of this is abnormal. It is winter. Some years are better than others. I still don't want to be in Florida, California or out west. Like was said earlier, every where has it pluses and minuses in the weather department. It won't belong until it is warm again.

Looked up some weather records form 1961-'62. Looks like the cold spell I remember was in Jan of '62. These records are for the N.O. & B.R. area, which means conditions were worse & temps colder in our area, which is a couple of hundred miles North of N.O.

"...Jan 9-13, 1962
MSY 5 consecutive days mostly below freezing, 16F/28F on 10th, 14F/26F on 11th, 17F/34F on 12th, low 15F on 13th; BTR 4 consecutive days below freezing with low 10F on 11th, 11F on 12th; GPT low 10F on 11th..."

Can't find a lot of info on the Louisiana temps, during that 1962 cold snap. But, according to this site, the lowest temp was 6.1°, on the 12th. Several of the other days were double digits, but below the teens.

https://www.almanac.com/weather/hist...251/1962-01-12

Yeah, that's why I remember it so well. Biggest snow & coldest temps I'd ever seen. I remember when it 1st began to snow. Me & a hired helper were milking cows. I think it was after school. It began to snow HUGE flakes. The biggest I'd ever seen. May be the biggest flakes & heaviest snow I've seen, 'til this day.

Here's a pic & info from that snow/cold, in the Shreveport area.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/96608399@N00/906216212

Also found this. Apparently, Jan 12, 1962 was one of the coldest temps ever recorded in this area.

" JAN.12,1962: El Dorado, AR set an all-time record low of -10 degrees, and Monroe, LA set a monthly record low of -1. These records were set when A strong arctic airmass moved over the region on January 9th. Several places stayed below freezing for several days."

Just watched the weather forecast on a local TV station. The guy said that although he was predicting a low of 7° in Monroe, some places in our area could see 2-3°. Those numbers just seem unreal, for this area. But, I can see from history that it has happened before.

We have about 6" of snow on the ground. Sunday ice on everything Was icy this am,roads were ok. Then warmed up 32+today ,kind of raining now, roads wet. See what happens over night. I've plowed twice this year about 4" each time. They call for more but passes us,we are at foot of Chestnut Ridge so we get what the ridge gets. Come on down!

Text from my daughter in Round Rock north of Austin

We are at 14 degrees now, will be at -15 tonight with the wind chill. Tomorrow night we will have another ice storm, and wed night another snow storm. Over 2 million people without electricity, many without gas and now pipes are bursting everywhere and are without water.

She's doing ok, has 8" of snow in her yard

San Diego occasionally drops down around 35* in the winter. Sometimes below freezing away from the coast near the mountains. Our only real bad time of the year is Aug-Sept when temps average in the low 90s and monsoonal humidity from the Gulf of Mexico reaches our way.
Cold front passing through today, temperature about 62*. It will turn into another big storm for Texas later this week.

This is north of Houston this morning- no broken pipes yet, but our homes surely aren’t built for this.

When I left Colorado and moved to Phoenix 17 years ago, my friends all teased me... "What are you doing, Todd? Going to AZ to retire?" I said, Yes! 30 years early.

Seriously, in my day job (pilot), I see all types of weather every day. But when I'm home, I want to look at Palm trees. They're like me. They don't like snow either. And 120 degrees doesn't scare me either.

My wife just told me our daughter (in Austin) sent pictures of the snow @ her place. Totally unexpected and new to her, being an AZ girl most all of her life.
